I was reading some of the responses again and think I might be able to help with a little more info about the bike.
Bought it last year and ran if for the summer. Ran okay but used a lot of oil. Decided to work on the top end over the winter months. Pulled the cylinder head and it was so badly carbed up that the most of the valves where in a slightly open position.
Decided to pull the cylinder as the base gasket was leaking a bit. The rings appeared to be rounded and smothed. replaced with 1st oversized yamaha pistons and rings.
The cylinder head was repaired, cleaned and the valves re-seated, with new valve stem seals. On first first attempt to put the bike back together the cam chain tensioner housing split, causing the tensioner bolt to bast shoot out, causing the cam chain to come off the lower gear resulting in bent exhause valves. Replace with used valves however, the guy I had do the job re-seated all for valves and double checked the intake valves.
