  • Shift fork install

I am putting my shift forks and gears back together and of course i can't remember how the shift forks went in. I know the order because of the numbers but I'm not sure if I am putting them in upside down or not. Should all if the number be facing the same direction, left or right? Thanks

    Hey there PShaw,

IIRC, the pins that fit into the shift drum are not exactly on the ends of the forks, but slightly to one side, so you need to orient them with regards to the drum, see picture:

      Shift forks

Well I thought I had it figured out. Seemed like they on go on one way. But I assembled the left side to test the shifting, down 1 up 2...and I can freely move the back tire in all gears. Something is wrong...the lower gears seem to mess ok with the uppers and everything turns....so I'm at a loss. My thought was shift fork 2 was on incorrect, but I don't think so. Could it be because I don't have the clutch assembled? Any thoughts or suggestions?

      Thank Phill

Definitely...Without the clutch, the transmission is not connected to the engine. The wheel should turn freely, just like when the clutch lever is pulled all the way in.

          5th gear

But I should be able to shift into 5th shouldn't I. I had to rotate the shift drum to get the shift forks on. Could that be the problem, or maybe shift fork 1 is on wrong?

            Got it

I got it. I took it apart again, installed one piece, tested, next piece, tested, etc. If the damn thing still slips you all will see pieces for sale. Thanks all.

I got first dibs...only 'cause I live closer than anyone else here does. Dragon Rider doesn't count...he doesn't own an XS anymore.
