  • Slide diaphragms?

Hi all, slowly but surely getting this beast road worthy and in doing so find little things often pop up that need to be addressed. This time is the slide diaphragms, two of them to be exact are in a pretty bad state and need replacing, I've searched the Internet and can't seem to find just the diaphragms for a reasonable price. To buy the two needed will cost a third of what the entire bike cost that being said my question is are there any out there that can bought without me having to sacrifice so much of my limited income. If I have to get the ones I've seen on ebay I will of course make that sacrifice but if anyone knows of another source I'd be forever grateful!

I haven't used them but here are some new diaphragms:-

    $19.50 US each.

There's supposed to be a way to replace the diaphragms without cutting the plastic ring too but I haven't done that either.

I have the JBM Industries diaphragms in my 81SH. Before I cut the rings, I tried to remove just the diaphragms. They ended up tearing and leaving behind lots of material. What I didn't do is soak them in warm water or anything to try to soften them up. Ultimately, I'm glad I went the JBM Industries route even though it was a permanent change to the slides. I would have *liked* to keep it as original as possible, but I feel this was way easier than the original style diaphragms would have been.

The down side is that it's possible the JBM Industries style diaphragms may someday be unobtainium, so consider that you will permanently modify the slides for them when you cut off the plastic ring.

Yeah I think I'm gonna stay with either good used ones or if possible a good oem replacement that doesn't require me to alter the slide. Thank you however for your time and input.

I have used the JBM replacements on several bikes. They are very good quality and easy to install. They will last for a long time. They are a much better solution than using 35 year old used ones

To clarify my earlier post, I highly recommend them and will use them on future projects. If it's between JBM and NOS, I'd pick the JBM ones. If it's between JBM and oem-style, I'd still personally pick JBM because they are good quality, affordable and easy.

Gentlemen thank you for your input , I actually placed the order the other day for the JBM replacements and received them today. have installed and the bike is dialed in and ....damn! She is running great and fast, faster than i expected , no wonder they called them the first superbike( or so ive heard ). I just want to thank you again for your honest opinions and access to your vast knowledge when it comes to these bikes. As soon as the weather holds I hope to take it to another member who has graciously offered to fix the second gear problem these bikes seem to be almost universally afflicted with, but as she sits engine running she sounds mean, real mean and I cant wait for a break in this denver weather to give her a honest run, again thanks for everything!
