Ok so i finally got the xs1100 i wanted, went through it thoroughly carbs, crankcase, electrical connections etc . put it all together and went to start it and the thing will only run when the starter button is pressed. once i let go the button it dies but if i hold the button in it runs. Now i know holding the starter button in for long periods can cause a host of electrical problems so of course i haven't done it anymore, but im perplexed as to one why the thing wont run and two why it runs when the starter button is pressed. any advice is appreciated as always.

If it's still there, check for a bad or disconnected wire at the Ballast Resistor, it gets bypassed when the Start button's pressed but it's put back in the circuit when you let off the button.-- Scott

I'm looking where I thought the ballast resistor goes but ask I see are the two coil packs, I do see two red w white stripe wires that don't have a corresponding connector or wire that the go to. ?79 xs 750, 81 xs 850( custom ), 81 xv 750; 80 G XS11 Standard

That is your problem!! Connect the two wires together, and try to start it. If it works well, SHUT IT DOWN AND DO NOT RIDE IT! Next, look at the coils best you can. Do they look stock? If so, you need a ballast resistor. Send me a pm with your address, and I can send you the one that's been living in my garage for the past few years.
If the coils look like aftermarket coils, then you can connect the two wires, and TAPE THEM UP WELL so they can't short and kill the bike(DAMHIKIJK) and you should be good to go. You need the resistor if the coils measure about 1.5 Ohms between the red/white and orange or blue, but if it measures 3 Ohms, you do not need it.Ray Matteis
