79F Standard front end help

if you put the MNS triple tree on there and used the standard forks the trailing will be wrong. The steering will be twitchy and it won't handle well.

I thought I explained the difference between standard and special front ends.

I understood. A few people have commented about the effect on handling but no one has said they did it and it sucked.

I put the trees side by side and the lead difference was noticeable. Made me happy since I am in the process of building a MNS and a Standard tree will stretch it out some. Never made one shorter before, but couldn’t see how less than an inch would make that much difference considering my riding style. Thanks for the info on the handling change though. No test ride yet, I had to do some disassembly to get wiring back in place DUH, and it got dark on me. Anyway, I’ll take my 80SG out right after and do the same route and speed and report on how they compare.

I recently purchased an F for the purpose of snatching the few common parts I will keep as spares for my three specials. There are several parts on this machine that will not support my specials including the trees.

I have not yet pulled the motor out of the frame but intend to do so in the next few days. Once the motor is out, the remainder of the bike (including trees) was headed for the dump.

It may be a week or so (certainly no more than two) before I am ready to haul the carcass off to the dump. If you want the trees you can have them for the cost of postage.

Don't sweat it, mate. I rode my Special around for ages with Standard forks in the Special trees. Made hardly any difference to the way it steered and handled, including some long trips with the trailer in tow.

Took the 79F out for test ride (72 and sunny today) and it felt safe. Went down a road in these parts called the Pig Trail, a 102 mile round trip from the house, and I really couldn’t feel much difference in how it handles compared to my 80SG. I was pretty apprehensive at first and expected it to fly out from under me, but the bike held fine through the turns and responded normally when pushing on the bars. I’m not a stunt rider and don’t get close to what the bike probably can do, but with my riding style it did fine with no surprises. I wouldn’t recommend putting the fork swap on the list as a desirable upgrade, but it didn’t make this bike feel quirky or dangerous and I will probably leave it this way.

The pig trail is a good ride, been up and down it many times. That's where trbig rolled ( and I mean literally rolled) his SH.

Some of those curves can really sneak up on you. Speed demon 4 wheelers going wide is what I watch for mostly. BTW that starting problem was handlebar related. Put the MNS bars on and the paint made a poor contact for the switch housing. DUH. Never used painted bars before so lesson learned. Got lucky and found the glitch quickly when I jumpered the switch to ground after I took it off.
