  • Spline lube?

    Merry Christmas. . .

I am going to lube the rear splines . . . Confused about what type of grease.

Also, can I pull the driveshaft with a flat head screwdriver? Assuming I should lube both ends.

    Help?

    Thanks!

I think that is how I do it. (It has been a while). You might use a rubber mallet to get that to move. That is how you get it back in there as I remember. There are a lot of posts about that zerk just squirting grease onto the side of the shaft. Maybe I have been lucky with my maintenance habbits because I use a lot of grease there and the splines look well -lubed every time I disassemble that final drive from the swing arm...

Padre, I suggest going to your local Honda stealer, by the small tube of Honda's moly lube, which is 60% molybdenum disulfide. Remove rear wheel and clean the spider hub and splines. Smear a bit of moly lube on both parts and install wheel. As for driveshaft splines, a normal sized grease gun and give the grease zerk on outer driveshaft tube 30pumps(should be done every oil change according to original owners manual).
BTW, there's been some long time ago here, controversy as to whether the grease zerk allows lube to the shaft splines..........it does, and has been proven so by a couple members a few yrs. back. The shaft assembly has never been removed on my Venturer from when bought bike new. The above mentioned lube procedure seems to have worked for some 35yrs. and 84,000mi., so I've stuck with that lube procedure.
