  • "Syn-Gold" finish

    Greetings

Anyone here had their Midnight gold parts replated?

I've reached out to a few sources without much success at a full matchy-matchy. Carb tops I have had done in brass by a shop that was able to tint it a bit making them a tad darker than normal and on a 750 from 5ft away you'd never know.

But with some work needed on an 1100 I am on a search once again for a more proper finish. Most of you know that rattle can and powder coat don't work. And of course true gold is out of the question....

    Open to suggestions here.

Took me a long time to find someone who does black chrome and the work has been stellar. I'm sure there's some old shop who knows what the gold work is also.

    Plating

I have WAY too many projects, and I usually have a pile of notes and parts together before I start one. One of my future ( If I live long enough!) projects is an 81 LH. I have just, in the past couple of days, started my preliminary research on. I will share any info I can conjure up. I would be interested in your source and opinion of of, the "black" chrome you mentioned being satisfied with. Atlas Chrome Plating does offer a "gold", but that's all I know. I do know for a fact, this is a great site for XS 1100 info. I have had the privilege of meeting many of the members, and have never ceased to be amazed, at what a great group of people there are here, and their willingness to share their knowledge. Please take the time to introduce yourself. Welcome to the site.

        Black Chrome

        Hi Todd,

I am interested in your source for black chrome. Have a few midnights that are going to need exhausts redone.

        Thanks, Mike

Check on your local Craigslist for people that "plate" car emblems for dealers. From what I've seen, it looks pretty good. Thinking real hard about getting my tank and side cover emblems redone this way. I have seen the cycle mags places that do plastic plating also.

Interesting idea. I'll look it up. A lot of that may be hydro-dip which might work on a few things but it's not going to hold up well on a grab rail I don't believe. Let me check and I'll share.

The company I finally located is:

                http://www.cal-tronplating.com/services.html

The gent to speak with is Carl. He's the only one who really understands what we are looking for. Being a former rider etc.

PLEASE be respectful of these folks and don't pester them if you're not serious. Don't burn a bridge for us who need the work.

It's NOT going to be cheap. I had a Virago pipe done and it was a bit north of $100. I'd clearly expect four pipes and some muffler jackets....you're going to drop $6-800 here folks.

So..how did it turn out? I'd say the net result is 90-95% of oe finish. We talked and our belief is that the oe pipes were fully polished then plated. Re finishing a rusted pipe is never going to be quite as nice. That being said from five feet it's very nice. It lacks a tad bit of the sheen of the oe finish but we attributed that to the under finish.

This is the rear deal however. Don't be misled by the "we do black chrome" guys who then run when you say exhaust. They are not doing black chrome they're doing powder coating or epoxy finishes that will not hold up. I also explored Jet-hot and they have a nice shiny finish now but it will forever look like the aluminized coating with color. So far Carl is the man for me.

I'm thinking of going with something like this for my LH.

Anyone tried it or something similar? Good/bad/indifferent?
