Epic fail fuel petcocks

Hi guys, I'm Andy from near Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. I should clarify that the epic fail involving the petcocks was my fault not the bike. I got my current 1980 XS1100G about a week ago after its import from the States. Although it's in real good shape, I dutifully set shout the fuel system as itclearly hasn't run for a long time. Taking the cover off one petcocks to find it totally blocked up with hard gunge which I set about cleaning out. It was at this point I had a flash of brilliance (Not!!!) and dismantled the other tap which was in the same state and which I also cleaned out. Unfortunately at this point I rembered that the taps are sided another I couldn't remember which bits were from which tap. What a dork!! Please can anyone overlook my stupidity and explain with words and/or pictures how to reassemble one of the petcocks assuming that the parts I will have left will make the other. Thanks

Photoblucket is down for maintenance so I can't put up a picture. Here's a deep link to the '80G Fuel Tank. I don't like doing it because they can change and it disgruntles the website owners but it should give you an idea how to fit the taps back together:

The main things:
Levers/pointers go on the outside./
The vacuum nipples both point proud and forward.
There's only one place to put the fuel line.

The fuel selector lever/pointer:
Forward is Reserve
Down is On
Rear is Prime

Or you could go to Yamaha Motors and jump through the hoops as you drill down to the '80G.

Thanks Scott, and Rob. Just to confirm. Am I correct in thinking that the curved gallery on the inside of the movable tap goes to the reserve/rear side of the main body?

Hey Sweeney,

Look more closely at the handle, inside the outer ring. There should be an R or an L stamped/molded inside there to help to tell which handle goes on which side.

Wow I wasn't anticipating hooking up with someone localish within a week of registering on the forum. Yeah, I think I've got the petcock internals sussed but still unsure of which lever goes with which body and can't locate any markings on them indicating which is which. Could I pm you re this and a couple of other things on the bike which looks like it's in real nice original condition?

This is really tempting, Ian. Liking the idea of having the facility to switch the fuel off rather than rely on lack of inlet manifold depression to stop fuelling when the engines off

I can't take credit for it. I think it was Greg or Phil that came-up with it. Super-easy mod, and u do away with the unsightly in-line gas shutoffs.

Know a few have done that, but not necessary as the Standard petcocks use a vacuum diaphram(vacuum hose goes from #2 carb boots to vacuum diaphragm port of each petcock), plus: if needed, just fix the damn internals of the petcocks......gee guys, how hard is it to fix them CORRECTLY......along with CORRECTLY done float needle and seats.

Same,same. Petcocks themselves, and which side goes where is self explanatory, as left and right petcock only fit and seat in one location.
Again, to simplify, lever straight down is ON. Lever straight forward is RESERVE. Lever straight rearward is Prime. Marked on chrome petcock cover as ON, RES,PRI.

No offense toward you Ian, but hate to see individuals take the McGuiver(cheap) route when dealing with a highly volatile liquid.....forgetting to shut-off, and due to leaking needle and seats, flood crankcase oil with fuel.....not a good lubrication scenario........and carbs flooding over, with fuel running on hot exhaust. With bike being parked on closed in porch area, one member here had a gas fire that almost destroyed their home. I won't but could give you many scenarios from here on this site of bikes burning to the ground from not CORRECTLY repaired petcocks and float needles and seats. Not an area because of short funds to take a short cut.......can be very costly.
