  • carburetor rubber plugs

I pulled the carbs today to evict the mud dobbers from the fuel inlets and very carefully removed the float pins so I could spray out the fuel passages.
The carbs overall looked very clean but only one carb still had the little rubber plugs in the bottom of the jet passage. I am going to assume that the others were eaten away with the old fuel and time.
Can I get just the rubber plugs or do I need to buy four overhaul kits...?
Seriously everything else is quite spotless. I am thinking the carbs were ran dry before it sat for ten years.

Make sure all the carbs have the crossover passage before installing the rubber block off plugs, if there is no passage, no plug needed.

        Hey Leggman,

What he said was IF the carbs had the sharing tunnel between the pilot and main jet towers, then they use the rubber block off plugs. Are they 81 carbs? They should have 4 small ports in the inlet bell aside from the large curved port. If they only have 3 small ports, then they are 78-79 series carbs, and then would use a block off plug...but usually had a threaded screw to seal the pilot jet because they feed via the sharing tunnel from the main jet tower.

The 80-81 carbs normally do NOT have the sharing tunnel, and they are designed to feed the pilot jet directly from the float bowl, and so they do NOT use the rubber plugs caps for the pilot jet towers. The early 80 model carbs have been found to SOMETIMES be the bastardized ones that have the sharing tunnel and require the block off plugs, but still used the smaller 110-120 main jets vs. the early model 137.5 size.

So....hopefully you checked to see IF they have the sharing tunnel. If they do, then they need the tower rubber caps, but if they don't have the tunnel, then they don't need the caps, and the PO put them on/in by mistake on the one where you found the cap.

If you don't have the later carbs (4 round holes around the circumference of the inlet bells), you probably need to make sure that the airbox is compatible with early carbs. The later carbs OEM air box has the breather nipples filled. The earlier carbs need to breathe through hoses connected to those nipples (not filled with plastic) or need to be vented some other way.

I will check tonight when I get home to see if they have the passage that requires the rubber plugs. I DO know the carbs were replaced by the PO because he got too energetic removing a float pin and broke one so he just put a different set of carbs on.

There is a hole in there so I will be using the rubber plugs. Right now I am waiting on bowl gaskets that should be delivered on Saturday.

If you are not the original owner, check the airbox as well.
