    Another problem: Key code?

i keep coming up with problems I can't believe. Somehow, after showing my painters how to open my fuel tank, I lost the keys. I can get the luggage rekeyed, I think. I'm concerned about the main switch key. Is that something I can order from the key code, as one would most automobiles? Is said code available from Yamaha somehow? Do I have to buy a new switch and key for a thirty six year old machine?

Yeah it's a pretty blue, but just because you're old is no excuse to buy a bagger. Fortunately I have wrenches.

There is a 4 digit key code on the lock. Take that to a locksmith and he can cut one from that. I have done that with several XS's I have bought.

      Hi Puskrat,
You may have to remove the ignition switch to find the code.

Has the proper blanks and prices are reasonable.
May as well clean the switch while you have it out

Get the code off the switch and try your dealer.

            Key Code

That question is sitting out there like a hanging curve ball over the center of the plate.

I'm not sure that they changed the blanks over the 4 year run but just to hazard a guess, "The one that fits."

According to the Ilco PDF, it looks like an X117 - YH48 blank.

                Key

As suggested by Maximphil, keys for your ride link is an easy way to get replacement keys. Switch code is all you need. Have used them several times with 100% success.

                  Thanks again everyone.

I work next door to a yamaha 4 wheeler dealer. Theyve ordered me a key and after a healthy wait i'll have it. Keys r us, or whatever it's called, would have saved me a couple dollars, but that's about all, and i doubt delivery would have been quicker. Only unknown i think is how well i read the code. Ign cyl is too scratched up to read, and the plating has flaked off the zero (i think) on the fuel cap.

if you get the right blank but not the right code just pull the tumblers out of the locks...

Hard to believe being somewhat familiar with your location having had an aunt/uncle who lived there for a few decades.

The big locksmith, whom I've used for entirely new locksets for my gun cabinet and a hard case, shooed me out the door, sent me to another who "does more automotive stuff". That shop closed moments before my arrival. There's a third,
Jimmy's, who I never tried, but beyond that nowhere i want to go carrying motoluggage around.
