I would have thought that the smaller engine would have a smaller YICS passage ?

I purchased an XJ650 in 2008. It had difficulty starting and once started it would die on twisting the throttle.

After a carb cleaning and then a sync, it ran like a scalded dog. It started instantly even in very sub-freezing temperatures. I bought Chacal's YICS tool and used it for the XJ650 sync.

I have an XJ1100 and it has always started well and run well (aside from the interlock relay failure). So, I have not synched it yet but will do so soon when I install the carbs back on the bike.

In my opinion, the YICS passages real benefit is that the YICS-enabled XJ bikes do not backfire on rapid deceleration. That is totally just my opinion.

I have belonged to xjbikes.com since 2008 and I posted there a lot when I was refurbishing the XJ650. Not very much since I sold the XJ650 and focused my restoration efforts on the XJ1100.

On xjbikes.com there is a group of people who swear by keeping the YICS bock-off tool in place 24-7-365 or just filling the YICS passages with substance du-jour as described earlier in this thread.

There is another group who never use the YICS block-off tool for synching and they do not block off the YICS passages for riding.

The third group use the YICS block-off tool for synching as intended by Yamaha and they leave the YICS passages open for riding as intended by Yamaha.

So, the YICS thing, in my opinion, has somewhat become a religious thing just like oil and tires.

The only difference is the distance between the ports. That's the reason for the position or placement of the O-rings on the YICS Eliminator.

I guess I'll have to try the tool for syncing, then check without and see just what does what to what all the way around all of these methods.
          Thanks, Done
PS once I get around to it I'll post any changes/differences if any.

            Yics

tool seemed to smooth out the idle on installation. Larry has in his directions that come with to leave it in, so the tool stays in my XJ11 now.
Concerning the lean mixture signs, (popping on decel) the idle screws are now at 4 turns out.
            I'm asking for advice.
At this point larger pilot jets are all I can think of, (really don't want to shim main needles).
Don't know what some of this background noise is.
Paste this into your browser, might want to turn down the sound.

After hearing your decel, I would turn the mixture screws out more and see if the popping is reduced/eliminated. Yes I know 5 or 6 turns out is a lot but it is not uncommon. Upping the pilots to 50 would probably help, but I would try the mixture screws first, it sounds like it is running healthy as it is.

                Thanks !
I can do that, seems the mpg. is at about 30. Never expected more but it could get to be less ?
I did have an XS650 with the idle screws out to 4 1/2, one of them disappeared during a ride.

The way you were wicking that throttle, 30 is pretty good.

I got picked on for not giving it to my LH.

Was just going over what has changed/what did I do.
I had the popping pretty well adjusted out before running with the Yics tool installed.
I'll try it without the Yics and see what happens with the popping.
