  • servicing the rear diff and the front gear

My bike (81 xs1100) has sat for ten years and I want to change all fluids before I go for the first ride. Can someone please tell me how to go about changing the fluid in the front gear box and how much fluid do I need for both the front and the back? Thanks Dave

    Hi Leggman,
Having sat for so long you are well advised to change fluids.
You need a manual so go to Catatonic Bug' web site and look for manual to download.
    http://www.ringler.us/family/mybike.html

I would advise you to disassemble the rear drive and lubricate with a high Moly grease. The shaft needs to come out and be greased too.

The front gearbox ( 5 speed ) runs in the engine oil.

The Middle Drive has a drain plug (bottom) and a fill plug (top) ALWAYS remove the fill plug first being very careful not to strip the (weak) Allen socket (Metric allen key required) Uses 80 W/90 Gear Oil GL4 360cc (ml)

Final Gear has same style fill plug as above. Uses same Gear Oil 300 ml

So you need a 1 quart bottle of Hypoid Gear Oil. If you want to use Synthetic oil you MUST go to 75 / 140 grade. ( or is it 70/145)

There is a special Dip stick for checking the oil level.
Use a fresh washer on the drain plugs and do not over tighten as they strip easily.

DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN the fill plugs or the drain plugs (like Phil said but with emphasis!). If you do, you will run into problems next time. I like using nylon washers for the fill plugs. Remember, they just have to be tight enough not to come loose with vibration and the drain plugs tight enough not to leak...

            Hey guys,

You all may think I've been sleeping on the job, or derelict in my duties, but I DO provide Catatonic Bug's manual download link to every new member that I register.

So after we beat someone about the body and ask if they're read the fine manual, what does the Welcome letter look like?

My responses vary depending on what info they provide, some just say they want to register, but haven't seen/read the NOTICE at the top of every forum page , so they don't provide a username/tmp pswd/ bike info so then I usually just use their email prefix.

                Hey there "new member",

Your account is now ready for use, welcome and enjoy! Your username and pswd are as requested. Congrats on your new acquisition. You stated you have an ## XS11 but you didn't mention whether it was a standard or special. You can use this thread "Vin#/Ser# Link" to verify your bike's year and model style, and then add that to your profile and signature. Both tech answers and parts are often year and model specific, and it makes it easier/quicker for folks to refer to it when replying to questions.

Next, follow this link "Catatonic Bug's manual link" to download user and service manuals for your bike, they are in PDF format, allow a little time, the service one is ~200MB file size.

And I put a couple of smileys at the end of my ribbing nudge statement, but hopefully he understood it was intended as a 'kind' jest.

And Scott, I corrected your TYPO.

What's the remedy if the PO stripped the allen cap? I only know how to get it off via destroying. I've got the rear end off right now though, can I just flip it and fill from the drain bolt? Or is there a reason that wont work.

I'd snap a good pair of vice grips on that shoulder portion of fill plug and tap the vice grips right smartly with a hammer. Once off, I'd then add a fiber washer to a NEW fill plug. This raises it up a bit and makes it easier to snap a pair of vice grips on if that should have to be repeated in future for removal.
BTW, for ease of removal, a hexed head metric plug for replacement can be had in those specialty drawers at your local Ace or Tru-Valu. Both the final drive and middle drive fill plugs were replaced with hex head fill plugs by me on my Venturer1100.

                        Hi Aggiesaurus Rex,
There is a breather on the top which would leak.
If the plug is already boogered a cold chisel and a sharp wack with the hammer will shift it.

                            Heat

I had a final drive plug that was stuck really bad. I was able to get to move by using a heat gun- before I rounded off the allen head flats.

I'll tell you, after having that trouble with the final drive plug, I went to nylon washers and never looked back!
