  • 80 MNS Starting sequence

What is the starting sequence for a 1980 MNS? Just got my permit, and having a tough time getting it started.

I can hear the starter go, its just not "catching" and starting.

Do I need to hold in the clutch and front and rear brakes?

If its cold, do I need to swing the petcock to prime?

Should I start with the choke on?

    Sorry for being a moron....

    Make

sure the bike is in neutral, turn on the gas and watch to make sure the fuel flows into the carb bowls, give it a minute then pull out the enrichement cct lever two clicks. Turn on the key, make sure the kill switch is in the center position and without touching the throttle hit the starter button. It should catch right away and idle at 2.5 K. Let it warm up until you here the pitch change then slide the enrichment cct plunger in one notch. Let it idle until it starts to pick up RPM then slide the lever closed all the way. Rev it up a couple times then ride it like you stole it.

      Thanks!

Looks like I was doing it right, but the battery seems drained.I will put it in the trickle charger tomorrow, and try again.

So it will take a few minutes to completely warm up, right?

If it does not take a moment or two to warm up then it is set too rich. The choke enriches the fuel mix for a cold start. If you can start it and then drive away in less than30 seconds it will cost you in fuel mileage. That being said different climate temps and how long it has been shut off (engine temp) will also affect it.

          Hi ATracksler,
Ignition needs 10.5 volts at the CDI box to fire so make sure you have a strong battery (jump it from another if necessary)
