  • Video of carburetors while running

I took this video to help diagnose some sputtering I'm getting between 5-6K RPM with low load. I was not totally convinced that the needles were up very high while it was happening, although you can't really tell in the video it was hesitating/sputtering when cruising at speed and the slides were about 1/2 way open, maybe more. I think I'm too rich on my main jets and I'm going to double check my float levels.

But anyway, if you were ever curious what your carbs are doing while you're riding check it out...

Did I see vapors coming out the No. 1 carb at certain RPMs? One thing about the experiment, is that carb operation is affected by having the inlets open like that. The slides look to be operating well. If there is vapor coming out carb 1, there might be issues with the exhaust system, or at least that is what I think. I had a burned-out baffle in the stock muff on the right side that absolutely cause a world of crap for me. There was no way to compensate it with carb settings. In fact it caused some heat in the carbs at certain rpms and very weird looking spark plugs...like they were glazed.

At what time of the video did you see the vapor? Possibly from my PCV filter if not the carb. I am running pod filters and straight pipes (no lecture on back-pressure needed) hence the carburetor tuning.

Well, it could have been a reflection or whatever. You watch and see if you can detect it...

That is just (I believe) the A/F mixture extremely well vaporized/mixed as it is going into the engine at WFO. Nothing out of the ordinary, IMO.

            Awesome video! GREAT idea.

I watched it a 0.25 without the sound.

1:07 is oil or exhaust vapors coming up and moving left to right.

1:20, 2:40 the fuel mix is visible, later on another few times too.

There were several times that clouds of grit, grass, road dust and dirt were blowing around the camera and the carb inlets but that's why you usually have air filters.

              Totally awesome!

I had a bit of that on my SG when I still had the original 3J6 engine. I found the sputtering at part throttle to be due to the pilot jets. The ones that were in there were after market rather than OEM Mikuni's. Put Mikuni's in there and it went away.

Some blowback from the carbs is normal but excessive amounts could indicate valve adjustment too tight or exhaust restriction. Might want to play with those and see if it changes.
