  • Get a grip! Seriously, I need new grips.

My 81 Special has stock grips and while riding to, from and during XSSE last weekend I developed Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in my right hand (thumb at wrist). I have a cramp buster and throttle lock on the grip but I don't us them except when riding on the open road.

Does any have a set of grips that they have found to be excellent for these bikes. My Harley has ISO grips which I love but they may be too bulky on the XS. I think the size is 130mm by 7/8ths inch which is fairly standard.

I also had a throttle problem I will address in a separate thread.

    Thanks for the advice.

The grip puppies and progrips look great. The third link didn't work for me.

If you have the OEM rototiller handlebars, THAT could be the problem with the wrists. Mine could not take it.

              Hey Rich,

Skids brings up a good point, many of US special riders swapped out the OEM rototiller bars for early year Gold Wings or such, much better wrist angles, same wide grip stance and rise/pull back, just better angled for the grips.

I can't remember the exact length, they come in 140,150,160mm types, but these are what I use:

I have XJ/Venture bars on my F, LOVE them. I sit upright and my hands feel great even after several hours of riding. My grips are like the stock ones.

There are two other things that can help with wrist fatigue: One is a Nepps throttle lock which has a softer position and a grippier lock position. The other is a throttle rest "spoon" that you can position for resting your palm on at the speed you want.

I ran Kuryaken ISO grips on my last XS and no troubles. Now I have a smaller grip that Bob Jones picked out and its not as comfy.

                      I may switch.

I'll look into the handlebars once I get better grips. My biggest problem seems to be riding with heavy gloves, which I did on the ride home. I had to hold the grips tighter. This was not my first long ride on the bike but it was my first using these gloves.

I used one of these on a previous bike (Honda I think). I liked it so I may try it again. The lock I have just holds the grip against the brake handle. Easy to us and move but it does get in the way.

I have a Cramp Buster on the current grip. I really like it.

I put these on my 81SH and really like them, replacing a crunchy, worn out set of the grips that TC mentioned. They are really soft and grip very well.
