  • Couple more questions..

While perusing this site I went into the repairs section and the section on interchange guide of frames, stands, and rear fenders. The first subject was on frames and showed a pic identifying the top pic as the special frame and bottom as standard frame. My project bike has matching VIN on frame and engine and starts with 3J6 which ID's it as a special yet my frame looks like the pic ID'd as standard...what the??? Am I reading this wrong?
Secondly, is there any difference between the 79 standard and special wiring harness? If so, is there a few particular wires I can check to determine what I have? (this is an extra harness I have that came with the bike)...the tag on the loom is faded and unreadable.
Lastly, where is a good source for connectors used on these bikes? When I pulled the harness off my 80SG (at least I think it's a SG) the two connectors plugging into the TCI unit are very brittle, in fact the 4 pin connector actually crumbled when disconnecting it. Is it possible to disengage the pins from the connector housing? Thanks for the help.

I'll start with the easy one. Connectors from here:http://www.oregonmotorcycleparts.com/ Tony has the parts and knowledge for most of the wires on our bikes. Send him an email about what you need, and he will let you know what he can help with. His site has some of the connectors and crimp tools listed, so you can get an idea of what is available.
Wire harness, I'm not positive, but I think it is different. IIRC the mount position of the TCI is under the seat on the special, but behind the seat on the standard. Some of the connections inside the headlamp may also be different. The move is doable, and I think those are the biggest things.
The pins will slide out if you want. Look in the connector and you will see a flat part of the metal sticking up into the plastic. You can use a small, flat bit of sheet metal to hold it down, and then pull on the wire side and it should come out.

Thanks for the info on the connectors.
I'm not looking to put the 79 wiring harness on my bike, going to sell that one but want to know if it's for a standard or special. I was hoping there was an easy check rather than spend a lot of time comparing multiple wires to the schematics.
Still hoping someone can clear up the muddy waters regarding the frame issue.
