  • Seat pan and rear fender question for 80SG

I picked up a project 80SG (tearing it down to frame) last month that came with 2 seats. The pans are slightly different, one has metal raised brackets towards the rear (with rubber dampers attached) and one has no brackets because someone decided to cut them off. Which pan would be correct for an 80SG?
When I got this bike someone had put a 80 standard hinged rear fender on but I didn't like the large gap between the seat and fender. Luckily the seller also gave me as part of his parts collection a 80SG rear fender which I want to put back on when I reassemble the bike. This may be a dumb question but does the 80SG fender require that black metal piece (is it called a main stay?) I don't believe it does because I mocked up the inner fender with the SG fender on the bike and all mounting holes appear to line up. Just want to make sure I didn't miss something.

Pictures would help. The SG seat has the bumper towers to stabilize it and the SG taillight fills that hole at the back. The taillight mounts to the aluminum grab bar that is supposed to be there.

Not sure what you mean by black metal piece. I don't recall anything like that. I have 2 SGs and an LG down to where I can take pics of any of that stuff at home. If you like I can take some pics of anything you like when I get home from work.

Thanks Greg...I was guessing the pan with the bumper towers was correct for the SG. I was aware the brake light mounts to the grab bar and in turn fills the gap between the seat and fender. I've already purchase a 80SG brake light and mount off fleabay. Unfortunately for me, the good seat had the bumper towers cut off so it appears my choices are either trying to weld on new bumper towers (more like find someone that welds) or have the seat (on the one which still has the bumper towers) recovered.
The black metal piece I'm referring to has the pivot point for the standard rear fender. I don't think it goes with the special fender but thought I'd ask because I've seen them on fleabay being sold as an 80 SG main stay. I'd take a pic of it but I've already packed that fender away in a box where it's being stored in the attic for the time being. Thanks again!

If those seats are the same configuration the covers, and foam for that matter, are pretty easy to swap out. There are just a bunch of little pointed tabs to bend that hold it on there.

That black metal piece on the rear fender is for the Standards only. 100% positive.

Just last night I decided to take a closer look at the seat & pan with the bumper towers. I was concerned about any rust issue with the pan so I couldn't just look...I ended up removing the old seat cover by carefully prying up on those tabs (I think there's 41), surprisingly I didn't break any. There's one that may be iffy if it survives another bend. The foam came off pretty easy and today I got everything I didn't already have to try the electrolysis method to remove the rust and then paint it.
I have two fuel tanks both with considerable rust inside that I plan on using this method also....and yes...they have dents and need paint.
Swapping the covers might be a good idea, I'll have to get the other seat down from the attic for a closer look to determine if it's worthy of a swap.

Thanks Phil, there's a few ebayers out there that don't know exactly what they are selling.

                That's a gross understatement.
