  • Connecting rod plane bearing color?

    A quickie that I can't seem to figure out. I am looking at the Yamaha fiche, and it lists #2F3-11656-00-00 thru #2F3-11656-40-00 with U.R. BLUE, U.R. YELLOW, etc. I am trying to figure out which OEM part # to order off of BikeBandit.com, but I have no clue what the color means? Is it specific to which connecting rod it goes to? If so, then why are there 5, not 4, listed?
    strangeness...
    thanks!

    It is a strange system that Yamaha uses, but I am very familiar with it. The different number relate to a color, and that is how Yamaha sizes their crankshaft bearings. The colors are arranged alpabetically. The conversion is as follows:

    1=Black
    2=Blue
    3=Brown
    4=Green
    5=Yellow

    Do you know how to determine what size bearing you need? If not, let me explain...On one end of the crankshaft, on the counterweight, the are two sets of numbers. One has 5 digits, the other, four digits.The group of 5 pertains to the main bearings, each digits represents each journal, 1-5 from left to right and the group of 4 pertains to the rods. On the front of the crankcase halves will be some numbers, 4, 5 or 6. Using the 5 digits from the end of the crankshaft, The first one is for #1 journal, the second is for #2, and etc... subtract the number on the crankshaft from the number on the crankcase. That is the bearing size number. Convert that number to the color as shown above.
    The same method applies to the rods also. The number on the rod will be smaller than the 4 numbers on the end of the crank. Subtract the smaller from the larger. That is the rod journal size. I re-bearinged the crank in my bike some years ago, and I wrote down this conversion chart in the back of my manual. Hope this helps.

      Hi John, thx for the info! Just wanted to double check with you on the order of the colors. The Yamaha parts fiche lists
      Blue
      Black
      Brown
      Green
      Yellow
      in that order, and the part numbers are ordered in the way too (-01-00, -11-00, -21-00, etc). Point being, they are not listed in alphabetical order in the fiche (blue and black are swapped). Wondering if you know if this is ok, or ... ? I am assuming they just didn't do them in alpha order, but wanted your input....

      thanks!

        Scott, I made a mistake on the sequence of the colors. Blue is the first size, then black, brown, green and yellow. Sorry about that I hope I didn't lead you to order the wrong bearings. How much is the dealer charging you? I just paid $14 per half for 2 halves of a main bearing. What a (*^&^$^ rip off!

          Hey, no problem John. I always double check everything, so it wasn't an issue. I changed my order before they had it packed so there was no problem. In case you are interested, I get my parts from www.cycle-parts.com - a small distributer out of Florida, and their prices are the cheapest I have ever found (except for partsnmore.com, but they have limited selection). The catch is, you have to enter the OEM part #; there is no browseable catalog or anything fancy. Also, min order is $100. But for major parts purchases, it definatly pays to order through them. I go to the Yamaha online parts fiches and grab the part #'s from there, then paste them into the form on cycle-parts. Oh, and the plane bearings are 9.59 a half - again, cheapest I've seen them :-)

          Anyway, have good one!

            That is a good price. When I did mine years ago, I paid $7.00 per half. It still cost over $150 to do all 9 journals.. Well, I'm going to put my bike back together now. Good luck with yours.
