  • Finally got it !!

Well, after 19 years i finally got meself a XS1100 LG Midnight Special.
Had the Midnight Special as a Tamiya 1:6 modell for 12 years now, always dreaming of laying my hands on his "big brother"
Bought it from a guy who didn't know what a wrench is even if it would bite him in the nose, so had a lot of delayed maintainence to be done.
rebuild the front master cylinder, cleaned carbs, replaced all fluids , replaced stearing head bearings and got a new exhaust.
And that's the sad part, nowhere in europe there's even a single original black Midnight special exhaust alive

There is no "f" in themselves. But you knew that.

              Faster...faster

He maybe right there you know...but only for the USA.

Like Piet, I'm a XS 1.1 Sport owner...and have quietly become a "Sport" anorak over the 12 years I've had the bike.

Differences I have managed to find out (and verify) are that the 1.1 Sport has a different steering geometry - giving it better handling, and a slightly different cam profile (can't remember if it's higher lift or more dwell)....got all the data somewhere in the factory supplement book for the Sport. The cam gives the Sport exactly the same horsepower than it's other 1100 brothers, but more torque, so the punch in take off is a few hundred rpm lower in the range.

Main thing is that the Sport has a much more comfortable riding position (for me)... with straighter bars and footpegs which position your feet below your hips. Overall it's a bit like riding the early '80's GPz1100's. The Australian RH model is pretty much the same bike as much as I can tell from emails with Jim and Glenn in the forum.

The Midnight Specials were produced about the same time as the Sports and there is some similarities (including the black coated engine). I think - but haven't actually managed to see evidence - that the Midnight Specials shared the cam differences with the European Sport / Oz RH models.

As for the fastest XS1100.... well, 10 yrs ago I would have said me on the 'Sport'...I somehow managed to survive those days (but have a lot of stories ). Have seen a blown one (Supercharged...with a nitrous bottle!!) ...so up for the trophy if you want to consider modifications...although how long the engine lasted I'm not sure.

I guess in a distance race some of you guys out there with the huge fairings would win.....and the Martini model we saw in Europe may have been another of the higher torque cam bikes as it was later in the range...but that two piece fairing I find a little ugly (sorry to any owners out there!).

I guess the true answer to the fastest 11 is......meet me at 2am and we'll find out ....

                Tnx for the replies

Thanks, people for all the replies.

But are we discussing the same bike here?
You don't ride a XS1100 or 1.1 because it's the fastest bike on earth (at least i don't, never exceeded 215 Km/hr, about 135 Miles/Houre and that was on a different bike also)
I ride my XS1100LG Midnight Special cause it's a wonderfull piece of technical achievement.
Besides, the USA speed limit is 55 miles, in The Netherlands it's 120 Km/hr (72 Miles)
So let me know about your feelings when you ride it, OK?

Greetings, Ursulets (that's teddybear in Rumanian)

                  Hey there Ursulets,

Well, to update you, the USA 55MPH limit went bye bye many years ago, in that many states have released it, and have 65 and 70 MPH limits on their highways that are away from city roads and traffic, and a few out west even have NO LIMIT!!

But, like you, I don't ride WOT all the time, or even most of the time, but it's nice to have it there when you want it. My feelings . . . .hmmm, well, it's a very rewarding feeling to be able to ride something that is this old, that I was instrumental in reviving and getting to run, and to look halfway decent... it IS a ratbike afterall, and also to ride with the knowledge of courtesy, and safety and respect for others that share the road with me.

                  Welcome to the XSive lifestyle!!
