  • Rear brake line question

As I disassemble my 80 Special down to the frame I have come across a few items that have stumped me. This is one of those items. There is a bracket that is used to secure the rear brake line to a plate. (Don't know what this plate is called...school me) This bracket has a tab extending out towards the bolt head which makes it impossible to get a socket or wrench over the bolt. What's the trick to this?

That plate is the rear brake torque plate. Just bend that tab back away from the bolt, it is a locking tab so the bolt doesn't rattle loose. You will find similar tabs on the brake rotor bolts.

Thanks Phil, makes sense as I was unsure about bending that tab out of the way. And you schooled me on the rear brake torque plate! I be smarter now.
NOTE: It's 11 pm and my brain is thinking go out to the garage and bend a tab... my back says rigggghhhhttttt.

Yep, if the tab breaks, just use a lock washer instead. GL with your restoration.
