    Should I use 75-140 or 85-140?

You should use 75W-140 full synthetic gear oil in both the middle and final drives.

Royal Purple and Redline oils are two options ...

Those expensive name brands are no better than Walmart store brand..... just saying.

        Agree completely ...

Walmart Super Tech is a viable option as well.

The 2 brands I mentioned just happened to be the ones that came to mind when I was responding.

Awesome. Thanks guys. I'm honestly just gonna go with Amsoil. They're based and manufacture every product not even 10mi from the shop. I know countless people that trust their lubes more than any other brand.

Also, I got 4.4 and 1.4 ohms of resistance on my coils...both are a full ohm out of spec...thoughts?

With or with caps on the wires?

thoughts: if half an ohm or more out of spec, replace them.

Hey, your signature says SG, or are you working on another different bike?? I can't remember from your other posts/threads.

The 81 model uses the 3 ohm coils with NO ballast resistor.

IF an SG, it should still have the 1.5 ohm coils and the 1.5 ohm ballast resistor, and so one coil is only 0.1 ohms off, The other would be ~3 ohms too high at 4.4 vs. 1.5.

And these are Primary wires...so the plug caps on or off won't matter with these readings. If you measure the Secondary windings, then you should remove the caps to determine if they are within specs of 15K ohms.

A final note, these OEM coils are 35+ years old, and were weak to begin with.
IF they are suspect, would suggest replacing with high output types, DynaTek or Accel, get the 3 ohm kind and bypass the ballast resistor, this way you can have 30+ KVolts firing energy ALL of the Time, makes starting much easier and eliminates low rpm ignition caused misses.

Working on the SG. They still have the plastic connectors on and was using a ****ty multimeter. My field coil is running at 4.4 and stator coil is at 1.4 according to that

These coils still look absolutely perfect too. No oxidation whatsoever and the rubber gasket and wire housings are in perfect shape... I wonder if I just need to use a good multimeter and take off the connectors

Okay, when you talk about COILS, we usually assume you're talking about the SPARK PLUG COILS...that's the specs I was talking about, and what Dbshea and possibly even Motoman were thinking when they posted. OR also sometimes the timing cover PICKUP Coils.

NOW, it's clearer that you meant the FIELD COIL and the ALT Coil windings. I vaguely remember you talking about them in another thread???

Like T.C. stated, maybe a bit of confusion. Eithr way, set multimeter to OHMS and check ohm reading across both poles of coil for ohm reading. Each coil, if still good should read 1.5ohm. Obviously, if they read that, they're stil good. .4 or less on reading,,,,,replace coils. Now, that is for ALL 78-80 XS 11's. 81 and XJ models use 3 0hm coils and no resister as stated by T.C.........same tolerance difference applies as with 1.5 ohm coils.

My Clymers is telling me that I should be getting 3.5 ohms on the field coil and 0.4 ohms on the stator coil...

I know it's not the definitive reference and has some discrepancies in it, but damn.

Again, Motoman quoted an earlier reply of yours, and is STILL talking about the Ignition spark plug coils, not the Alt's Field coil and alt windings. Your specs for those appear to be correct, but having a properly calibrated meter is important in measuring that LOW of values. Try ZEROing the meter by touching the probe tips together, if you get 0 on the ohms scale, then good, but if you get some small value consistently, then you'll want to subtract that value of resistance from your actual measurements. Also, clean your meter probes, and the contacts of the coils, or if possible test the bare were just beyond the actual plug ends to ensure that you're not measuring corrosion in the crimp on connectors!

Just measured the resistance of the multimeter across the probes and it's 0.9-1.0, so I'm only 0.1-0.2 out of spec!
