  • Oil Consumption rate

Just added 1 1/2 quarts to bring her up to the top line again. That finished off the 5 quart jug I bought since getting the bike and changing out the oil and filter. So this was burned up over the 1800 km I drove it since I got the bike.

I should have monitored it closer to see if more of that happened in the beginning after she sat unused by PO, and I know initially I looked a couple of times before a ride, but not over the 1000km weekend I just did. Dumb, I know.

After top up, I started and warmed it up. #4 pipe did not get real hot like the other three. This was 1st time noticed, had that issue with #2 cylinder in beginning. So I nipped a 1/4" off plug wire and it seemed to make a difference. Not sure if related or not.

......clip a 1/4" off the other three in order to eliminate THAT as the issue. Have to use 'process of elimination'..........can't just be throwin' out wild guesses there.

      Hey there DBBrian,

Since the bike/engine had sat unused for a time, varnish/gum could have developed on the rings and could be preventing them from scrubbing and sealing like they should. Also, the engine/rings needing to be reseated against the cylinders, although a 1800+ Km should have gone a long way towards reseating them. Just before/at your oil change, you might want to try putting in some Marvel Mystery Oil, run it in the engine for a little while, and then drain and fresh oil, and then monitor the oil consumption to see if it improves.

With one cylinder not firing well, that could also contribute to increased oil consumption since reduced compression pressures due to no fire would allow oil to get pumped/leaked into the cylinder/combustion chamber and then pumped out the exhaust! But since that cylinder wasn't firing well, you may not have noticed any increased smoke!!

How did the PLUG look on that cylinder that you nipped the 1/4" off of the wire?

Also, are you using DINO oil, or some variation of Synth/ partial!? The tolerances, pistons/rings/cylinders are much looser than modern machines, and that can also allow slippage of oil past especially if it's more slipperier/thinner than regular dino 20-50.

I followed your advice earlier T.C. and used a little MMO before dumping the oil that came with the bike. Maybe time to do again?

I don't see smoke, but I seem to have acquired a new cologne with this bike...fine by me, call it "Ode de XS"...a mature smokey blend

        Didn't pull the plug.

Nipped all 4 wires in the beginning, by your recommendation then, and it seemed to fix the cooler #2 at the time.

I used Quaker GTX 20 -50. Just bought another jug and have a new filter ready. Think I'll change it tomorrow, oil is starting to look dark.
