  • Wire Tool

Does anyone actually have one of these tools? The service manual says "contained in the owner's tool kit" but despite finding a nice kit in my bike, there was not wire tool, unless its hidden somewhere else on the bike.

Not needed, but originally came in the tool kits on the 78-80 Standards AND the 81 Venturer tool kits(originally had one in kit when I purchased bike new). If you look at each swing-arm side of the Stndards and Venturer, there is a welded hook on outer portion of swing-arm both sides.

        hi Brian,
put a 1 to 2 inch board under the centre stand to raise the back wheel off the ground. You will need the clearance to get the wheel out from under the fender. Take a picture or make a drawing of the spacers on the right side of the axle so you remember how to re assemble.
The original exhaust will be in the way of pulling the axle.

          Thanks for replies guys.

Ian - no idea what you mean by 350/360/400's. If you have a half dozen wire tools, do you want to sell one to complete my kit?

Motoman - yes I saw those hooks on frame & swingarm. You say 'not needed' - assuming if I raise the bike like Phil said?

Phil - your last sentence, is what I read too, and why I thought I needed the wire tool. So the exhaust is in the way....UNLESS I raise the bike with the wood under centre stand?

...or if raising the bike is the answer... I was given a lift with this bike, but think some selective wood blocking is needed to lift it up - anyone know what lift points would be best to target? Centre stand up or down?

I get these are likely dumb questions for most of you. I want to be extra careful to do things right with this bike - I like it so much!

Yup.......that works. Or, if rear fender mounts anything like the Venturer's fender, can remove seat, remove the two bolts from top rear of fender, one each side and fender swings up out of way for rear wheel removal.

Wrong. He has a Standard with original pipes. Not a Venturer with their short Special exhausts.

The original exhaust will be in the way of pulling the axle.
Exactly why he is asking the question in the first place!

What has this got to do with the question asked??

Hi Brian. Yes, mate. You will need the tool, or something similar to compress the rear shocks so you can reach the axle nut to remove it. You can try asking on here, or at a pinch you could use a ratchet tie down strap in its place. Simply hook the end of the strap around the swingarm on one side, loop it up over the rear frame tubes under the seat (tigth fit, but it can be done, then hook it round the swingarm just in front of the shock, and sit on the bike to put some downward weight on the suspension (bike on sidestand) as you winch the swingarm up. Well, we did it like that with a friends bike and it worked well. it helps if you have another person to help in this operation.

Is it possible to remove or disconnect shocks to drop the axle below the muffler? I thought I did that long ago...

... Or maybe I was able to raise the wheel/axle without the resistance of the springs (shocks disconnected). I think the fender comes off regardless.

I would like two, if you can spare them.
PM me with cost and process of payment, if that is OK. Thanks, CZ

I just bought the wire lever from a guy in 'Vegas for $25 to go with the wire hook that I've had since I got my '80G. Now, after almost ten years, I finally don't have to take off the shocks or use straps or some other Rube Goldbergesque confabulation to compress the swingarm and take off the rear wheel.

So 36 years ago my new G didn't come with the cable.
The tool kit had the lever. Fast forward to present time...

I realized the wire should make rear removal easier than previous endeavors. I had replaced the stock exhaust with a 4x1 Supertrapp (sad face now) some 20 years ago.
The 4x1 exhaust still blocks the axle removal.
I found a NOS wire on fleabay a couple of weeks ago and now have it sitting on my work bench - yet tested.

I think I know know why the dealer never included the wire...

Where the heck do you store it on the bike?
It will not fit in the bag-o-stock-tools and even if it did it would not fit in the tool box/holder behind the side cover.

Does anyone know its proper on-bike storage location?

I have no idea where the factory put the wire. It does fit on top of the tool bag in the storage compartment but it can be a hassle to arrange the tools in the bag so everything fits and the door will snap closed and stay closed:

The wire hook tool can be stored in a bag under the left-hand side cover and use the Registration compartment latch to help hold it in place:

I can barely get just the tool bag into the box.

This weekend I'll take a tool inventory and play with available room in the bag/box.
Given the rarity of the side covers I will not try the"hold it with the registration clip".
