  • Needs Shifter Parts

I just got my new (1980) XS1100 home yesterday and started gutting it, removing things I don't want like fair and trunk, etc, before starting the real work, figuring out what is wrong with 2nd and 5th gear. I started that tonight.

From reading on this site, my problem with 5th gear is DEFINATELY the missing dowel. There are 2 dowels that are likely causing me problems.

    1) The #5 dowel is completely missing, and the little star shaped piece of metal that holds the dowel in is twisted and broken. There is no metal left to hold the dowel in, if it were there in the first place, which it isnt. It was not in the area around the cover, so I have no idea were it went, probably back into the case. Yes, I will find it.

    2) The dowel next to it, going counterclockwise was pushed out and the metal star thingy was bent. I cannot get this dowel to push in to that it is flush, I have no idea why. This seems to be where things are getting messed up.

So I guess my questions would be

    1) Where do I get some new dowels?

    2) Where do I get the star shaped piece of metal that hold the dowels in?

    3) Where can I get a new gasket to seal the cover once I get it all fixed?

    4) How the heck do I remove the stuff on top of the star shaped thingy so that I can replace it, assuming I can find a replacement?

I know I am using technical terms here (thingy's and star's), just tranny's are not my specialty (obviously), but I have a feeling I will know a whole lot more about them real soon....

    Thanks for your help.

I found them online and placed an order for them. I appreciate your effort though. I am still not sure I know how to install them though, hoping my 'on order' clymer manual will help out.
