  • Flickering / failing turn signal indicator

    79 XS1100SF

Had her probably 15 years. Did a lot of work on it to begin with, but mostly she's just run every year. Two kids left me riding it less, but lately, with a divorce and a girlfriend an hour away on half-decent back roads, I've been on it it a lot the last few weeks. Riding out there tonight.

Anyway, I noticed that seemingly AFTER a long ride, when the battery would be at its full charge, that the turn signal indicator on the handlebars is flickering and weak, even going off. It does appear that the signals themselves are working fine; it's just the indicator lamp on the handlebar.

With the engine off, it seems to work 100% fine. So I didn't think it was the lamp itself in the indicator. Heck, I've literally never opened that up, so who knows.

But it seems weird that this would be happening at a presumably HIGHER voltage (engine on, long ride). I'd expect quite the opposite for the usual XS11 electrical gremlins.

Anyone run into this particular issue? A search through the forms here turned up nothing similar that I could fine.

I've done no voltage testing yet, so obviously that's the next step.

Just really weird that it seems to be higher voltage causing flakiness instead of the opposite.

P.S. Totally separate topic - anyone successfully add an accessory port for iPhone charging on one of these bikes? I like this app at rever.co for tracking my route, but it's a battery killer (I'm still mostly a fan of paper maps).

Maybe its not voltage related? Could just be a loose connection that's picking up the vibration from the engine or the road?

Yes, I'm starting to think this must be the case, wingnut. Time to start rooting around for my Clymer and wiring diagram...

For years, I always said with these old bikes, as far as what goes wrong... "If it's not an electrical problem, it's an electrical problem". =)

I can't think of any real problem that wasn't electrical that I've had. I consider the 2nd gear issue more of just an idiosyncracy. My old XS750 fell of of 2nd if you shifted up into it from 1st. My XS11 falls out of 2nd if you shift down into it from 3rd.

        Bulb

It very easy to get to those bulbs so that is where I'd start. Always do the simple checks first. Look for any corrosion in the socket itself and that the wire to the socket is good. Then back track into the head light bucket to the connector and check that. On an SF, if you don't have the three rubber grommets at the back, you'll find it gets a lot of moisture in there. While the bucket is open, it may be a good idea to pull all the connectors apart and clean them all.

Well that very next ride my front right signal died. Finally pulled the headlamp open today and the ground wire had broken off. I'm guessing this explains the intermittently flickering indicator light, if I understand how it is wired (I probably don't).

Soldered a hack in and it's solid and so is the indicator, at least in the driveway.

Haven't fully tested yet because I ran to the cycle parts store for pads and a new headlamp before they closed. Bloody car wouldn't start (15 year old BMW car, far less reliable than the 40 year old XS11!) Now sitting for 2 hours so far with my 4 year old waiting for a dang tow.

......electrical issues with both the XS11 AND car!........definitely says you need to study up on 12v dc electrical systems.

                Hi John,
Ground wire is frequently the problem.....you may have fixed it
I have been chasing ground issues on mine for years. May as well check and clean them ALL

Hah, the XS11, *I* will fix. The BMW, I fire up the Money Gun and let someone else deal with it.
