Shinko 230

I am looking at the Shinko 230 touring tires for my 79 special. I currently have older mis matched tires that are OK except for the divide between lanes on the highway. Kind of unnerving at times. Anyway, I like the price of these tires and have seen them mentioned on here. I was looking for some real time feedback especially relating to the issue I have. I understand they don't seem to last as long, I'm OK with that aspect. Well, your thoughts are appreciated.

Pirelli Route Tires?

I understand they don't seem to last as long

I have NO personal experience with the Shinko tires but I HEARD the same complaint about short life several times.

I have Pirelli Route tires on all three of my XS11's. These were highly recommended by an excellent and experienced XS11 driver as a reasonably priced tire with great performance characteristics and decent longevity. They are absolutely WONDERFUL. And, the price appears to be only a few dollars more than the Shinkos.

I haven't LD driving experience many here have and I am comparing the Pirelli to the complete garbage that was on these bikes when I got them. I do have much more expensive tires on my XJ550 and they do NOT feel as nice as the Pirelli tires.

In addition, Pirelli HAD a sale going on a month or so back which MAY still be active. I got a $40 rebate Visa card on the purchase of two making them less expensive than the Shinkos. I am not sure if that rebate program is still active but it is worth a look on the Pirelli web-site.

The ROUTE tire is apparently not available for the STANDARD with it's larger tire but they are absolutely available for your Special.

Looking at the Pirelli route 66 they are about $40 more than the Shinkos, not bad. I don't do much LD riding as well, but I have ridden this bike to work more than I have the Harley in the last 4 years combined.

I love the 230's, everything about them, nice wear, looks, road holding, I'm sold. Getting ready to spoon off a 12,00 mile 712 this week and put on a new 230!

I have been using the Shinko's for years. Love them. Normally use the 712 but once tried the 230. Didn't see any more mileage out of it so went back to the 712 since i really like the way the feel and stick to the road.

I ended up going with the 230 Shinko. It made a big difference on the cracks on the highway. It was more the rear that made the difference. I changed out the front and rode it first. Anyway time will tell how they last. Much better either way from the tires that were on there from circa 2002! Thinking about a set of 712s for the shovelhead. Oh, the knuckehead that balanced the front at cycle gear left the old factory 20oz weight and added 1.25 grams of stick on weights oppisite of it ??

Time to take it back and tell them to fix it!! They WILL re-balance for free on something like that. If not, ask for manager, if no good, just let them know you will be emailing HQ about it. Sounds like they had a new guy on it, and nobody was watching him.

I just put the factory 20 gram where he placed the stick on and called it a day. Rolls down the road just fine.
