Hi, we'll I finally found the bike that got away. I had a 79 special and sold it in 05 after owning it for 2 years. If I had know what I was doing it never would have sold it. Fast forward to a week and a half ago I caught another one on facebook page and bam I own another 79 special. It needs a few minor things, however, like front calipers. I also has no mirrors and I was wondering what people are putting on as replacements. I'm also looking for the same style seat I had on my old one a high step king and queen with the really high passenger back. I also had a national cycle windscreen that I thought looked pretty good but it had a rounded circle cut for the headlight bucket and it looks like the new ones have an angled opening that looks kind of weird to me. Anyway, I'm way excited to hit the streets with this thing.

The '79 Special parts fiche has been removed for some unknown reason. Those mirrors are still available OEM. Mike's XS has repops that may be OK. For OEM, the mirrors are the same on the 1980 Special. Look them up on Partzilla or similar OEM parts discounter. Otherwise, there are many aftermarket mirrors threaded for Yamaha.
Calipers, you get from somebody like Andreas on here, or eBay. New pistons are available if you require them.

Well I'm not actually sure if I need new calipers actually. They guy I bought the bike from had a mechanic go through much of the bike including rebuilding the front calipers but the right front in leaking now and he said it wasn't before. Do you think that might be fixable? It seems like it's leaking out of the bleeder valve.I have 3650 cc worth of Yamahas in the garage.

If the bleed valve threads weren't damaged, you can fix it. The threads can be damaged by cross threading or using the wrong replacement bleed valves. You must replace with the same metric threads as original. You may be able to repair damaged threads with a heli-coil if you know what you're doing. You're going to have to start with some investigating.Marty (in Mississippi)
