Hello my name is Steve and I'm new to the forum. I was recently allowed participation so i could share and learn. Thank you Mr. Gresham.

This intro may be lengthy but I want to get the details out there. I acquired my '81 XS1100 Venturer in July 2015. I got it from Joel, a good friend of my brother, a guy I've also know for many years (small town life.) Joel acquired it after his dad, Doug, passed away. Doug was a good friend of mine. Doug had bought the bike in '95 according to the title history. It was Doug's pride and joy. According to Joel, some time between 2000 and 2005, Doug had torn the engine down to do a top end rebuild. During this time Doug's wife decided to serve him divorce papers so the bike got put on the back burner. The bike became a contentious subject during the divorce so Doug never finished the rebuild. Doug knew if she took it she would have it destroyed out of spite. As life does, his took a turn and Doug's health began to slip. Sciatica. Doug could no longer ride much less get down to work on the bike. In 2012 Doug became ill with what the local quack shack called the flu. A week later Doug was in the hospital with septicemia. Doug passed. His son-in-law wanted the bike but had no way to get it back to kentucky so Joel ended up with it. Joel offered it to my brother, but being a truck driver and father of three, he had no time for it. It was offered to me and I went to take a look. Knowing that Doug had owned a motorcycle repair shop and was a rather a meticulous individual, I figured things would be in good order. All the big parts were there. There were many boxes and from what i could see it was complete. I talked it over with my wife and did some research and figured since it was free it was something I could take on. I got the bike home and then the paper chase began. Joel's sister was R.P. on the estate. She lives in Kentucky. took about 9 months but i finally get all the paperwork i need. Its been a year and about $300 for missing parts and new rings but it finally fired last week. I am a truck driver so progress is slow. I'm home on the weekends. I hold an Associates degree in auto and diesel mechanics but the multi carbs are something I'm not familiar with. the bike came with a service manual and a set of mercury sticks. I still have some issues to work thru and will address those in separate threads. I'm trying to get it running this summer so i can see what else needs addressing and get a feel for it before a full strip and restomod. I will post pics when i figure it out.

      Hi, Steve -

Sorry for the loss of your friend ...

At least you have his "pride and joy" to remind you of him often ...

To post pics here, there are a few steps to take:

      1) Create an account with a 3rd-party photo-hosting site, such as Photobucket

      2) Upload your pics to Photobucket

      3) Copy and Paste the image code from any uploaded pic into an open line in your post

      WELCOME to the Forum!

We look forward to the pics and your progress with the Venturer!

          Hello again, Steve -

Actually, what you have there is a 1981 Special, not a Venturer.

Someone may have told you it was a Venturer because of the fairing, bags, and trunk.

Here is what a 1981 Venturer looks like:

It was a one-year-only model, and came from the factory loaded for touring.

It had a 6.3 gal. tank vs. the Special's 4.0 gal. tank ...

Also, the Venturer had a 17" rear wheel vs. the Special's 16".

Different seat, side covers, tail light ... lots of differences from the '81 Special.

          Good luck with your project!

I still trying to figure it out. I know the trunk is not original, the faring and bags are. Or at least they are a matched set, the keys match. The bike is wired with a direct plug in for the fairing. I just checked the tires, the front is 19" and the rear is 16". There is no provision for mounting the headlight other than the fairing.

            The vin is 4R0003149.

I can see the differences. I'll continue working on it and come up with a plan. May do a full conversion. I like the larger tank. I plan on changing the seat to something a little more conducive to touring, hi-low saddle seat.

I have kicked around the thought of making a trike out of it. A Dana 44 high pinion is a reverse cut gear set so if its flipped around it will work with the reverse rotation of the XS drive shaft. It would be a custom length axle, long side, short side. Still need to work out reverse. Its just a thought.

The first 3 characters of the VIN- 4R0, tell you it is an 81 special. Not a Venturer.

              BTW, welcome to the insanity.

Yeah, the VIN confirms it as an '81 Special (SH), Steve.

                Venturer VIN's begin with 4R1 ...

BTW, a lot of the help given here is model-specific ... it would be a good idea to change your signature to reflect that you have an SH, and not an H.

Members often refer to someone's signature when offering advice and/or help.

                  Hi aqqus,
As you now know you have an 81 Special which has had the touring accessories added. The bags are the same as a Venturer however the fairing is from earlier perhaps 78 or 79 considered to be the best aerodynamic fairing for the XS called Pacifico ( I think). I think that trunk was a Yamaha accessory also but only ever as an add on. Looks big enough for anything you might need along the way
81 has some unique parts in the carbs and ignition module. Your exhaust looks original and in good shape so tuning will be relatively easy.
                  Welcome to the madness.

Stock exhaust pipes can make a world of difference in the ease of tuning. Any change in the exhaust and it becomes a bear. Not impossible just really hard. Think Everest without oxygen hard.

The exhaust is rough. The left muffler has a large patch epoxies and riveted over most of the bottom. I'm working with the carbs now the floats were very high, almost a 1/4" over spec. It now idles but needs to be on half choke to run and has a dead spot off idle. It's progress

If the exhaust was rotten out the bottom, chances are that the baffles inside are gone. Wasting a lot of time tuning the carbs for that kind of exhaust is not good. Damn, I just sent a 4-1 RC header and muffler cone to the dump.
