  • Front suspension upgrade questions/79 F

I'm sure many of you have made upgrades to the front forks. I am curious what you used, and how you felt about the difference. Also curious about whether given the chance, if you would do the same thing over again. Does a fork brace make a noteworthy difference? (Cost vs performance) Most of my riding is with a passenger, and I understand this makes a major impact on fork compression during braking especially. The stock rear shocks seem to us at least, to be acceptable. Average two up load is apx 350 lbs.

I have a 79SF and if you look at the top of this page, it is the second from the right with the yellow spark plug wires and the clear turn signal lenses.

I have not done much to the front suspension other than change to progressive springs and add a TKAT fork brace. The springs I could take or leave. they do help somewhat depending on your riding style but the fork brace made a noticeable difference in handling. Get a good one though because a weak brace can still let the forks move. Some guys run emulators but I cannot comment on that since I don't have them.

Once you un-can a can of worms, the only way to re-can them is with a bigger can.

Thanksfor your reply. I have my opinion, but I want to get a few more replies before I offer my two cents worth. I will say, the more I ride my F, the more I like it! A little over 500 miles since I got it back on the road, but my bucket list of adjustments and tweeks is nominal. Its a fun bike to ride.

You could try compressed air initially. That will take some of the "dive" out. You could contact Traxxion Dynamics in Woodstock, GA and ask what they could do for you. Several of us have used their services and been very impressed with the results.

        Their number is 770-592-3823.

MPittma100, thanks for your input as well. Other than Progressive and Traxxion Dynamics are there other companies or methods of improving the front suspension? I am curious about what people have tried, and how they felt about it.

            2manybikes,
Do a search for posts from Jetmechmarty.
He went down two different paths for the forks/suspension of his Special.

He has very strong opinions on what to do.
I have ridden the final result and can say.. it is fantastic in it's true meaning
            being of thing of fantasy.
However it was not a low budget option.
