  • Brake pad type???

    Hello all.
Please enlighten me as to what type of replacement brake pad I should get for my 81 1100. I am seeing organic, part metal, Kevlar etc.
anyone please advise at your convenience. Your help in the past has kept me from making some pretty dumb mistakes.
    Thank you!

You don't want Part Metal/Sintered. Were designed mostly for racing applications when developed, but have found their way to street bikes ie. SPORT BIKES, they are supposed to provide good feel and grip without requiring much warm up, but they cause quicker wear of the rotor.

Kevlars are the newer material, and are the newest RACING application, and require more warm up/heating before they provide good grip/braking action.

Organic are closest to OEM, will provide quicker grip/braking action and feel when cold, wet, but they are made of softer materials so they wear faster, but they don't wear down the rotor anywhere as much as sintered.

PS, I moved your thread, it was a tech question, belonged in the TECH discussion area, not the anything/topic member's lounge.

Organic pads are the way to go. They stop better cold.

+1 on the organics. I use EBC brand on both the XJ and on the Concours.

This what I have read so far...

Sintered = Sintered copper material- Best for stopping in all conditions, including wet....no heat fading at all. I had these on one of my Triples. They stopped GREAT but they made such a loud squeal when stopping that everyone would stop and look at me at intersections. I had galling of the rotors. I got rid of them.

Semi-Metallic- Steel wool in resin- No reason for this product to exist, except maybe price. Make rust spots where the dust land on your bike

Organic = Some type of temperature resistant fibers (frequently aramid) in organic resin. Good all-around properties. Some heat fading. Wear fast.

Kevlar- Kevlar in organic resin - similar to Organic. Have copper chunks to help with heat dissipation to resist fading.

I would choose Organic or Kevlar interchangeably.

You can't beat the price of set of Kevlar from D2Moto. I have them on all of my bikes.

Nobody mentioned that organic pads make a lot of dust on the calipers, wheels, etc, not so much with kevlar, YMMV
