Has anyone ran VP 110 in their 1100? If so, any comments?

The XS1100 engine, from the factory, was designed to run on REGULAR, LOW OCTANE gas! If you run premium, you WILL carbon up the engine! Race gas is even worse. High octane fuel is slower to burn, so it will not combust until the spark fires. 87 is all you really want to go unless you have an RC Engineering engine, and there are few of those around(though I DO know of one!).
If you have been running hi-test or premium fuel, you WILL need to get rid of the carbon build-up. The easy way is drive bike for about 10 miles to warm it up, and spray Barryman's B12 or Seafoam into the carbs until it dies. Let it set for at least 20 minutes, then start it up and ride hard for about 1/2 mile.

The carbon doesn't worry me as much since it is usually third gear full throttle. Need to produce as much horsepower as possible. These motors will probably be rebuilt after half a season or so of racing. We have three. The plan is to keep the two spares ready to go just in case. VP has an 87 octane fuel, the MR12. Maybe we'll give it a try. The motors are wedged into this bad boy.

This was the first time we ran the car. Took a little getting used to. Then the clutch burned up. We later realized that the middle drive was way low on oil. Next time will be totally different. Hopefully the link works.

I am still trying to figure out how they turned the drive around in the middle drive so that the driveshaft comes out the side and not the rear.

The shaft for the trans runs left to right in the engine, so the output would be a shaft like a chain drive bike. The middle gear drive has the gears cut for a 90, so the drive shaft comes out the back. For more power, I can send you some notes from Yamaha on what to do with the cases and such, send me a pm.
As it's for racing, then do run race fuel, and advance the spark about 4 or 5 degrees to put the HP at a little higher RPM. RC engineering, back in the late 70's, ran their XS1100 all season WITHOUT splitting the cases, and this was drag racing! I would see if you can get some stronger head studs, "O" ring the heads, and go for it!
