  • Urgent Help Please

Hello all, so today I finally got my new battery in the mail and went to install it when I decided to check the voltage first. After I checked it I forgot I swapped it 180 degrees and installed the terminals wrong. Now no power gets to anything and I can't exactly figure out why. Any suggestions? I saw some smoke come from the fuse panel but Im not sure what exactly went because all the fuses look ok.

Check that 30amp main fuse in the enclosed booted cover at top of frame rail under seat just front of battery.

Ewwww... Fuse panel, under the right side cover? Smoke, that doesn't sound so good. You sure it was coming from the right side?

But... Have you checked the 30 amp main fuse? It's in a black receptacle under the side cover on the left side. It should have fried first and saved your bacon, per se.

Edit: Brant posted the same thing as me while I was typing, like he said check the 30 amp main first.

BTW fellas, the 79SF does not have that separate 30A main fuse like the 80-81 does, it is in the main right side panel with the rest of the fuses.

Thanks bikerphil!..........figured it wasn't necessarily same location as the later ones, but least figured it could steer him in right direction.....just wrong side/location.

He said the little fuse in the boot cover had fried, I wonder which bike/setup he actually has.

Hmmmm.......I'll guess with ya'. Maybe just from manufacture date on frame neck..........if so, a year early from actual MODEL yr. and a dollar short!

You did not get lucky you got saved by an engineer. Unfortunately people put batteries in backwards all the time and that is what the fuse is for. Glad you did not fry everything. However I would suggest that you take a look at all wire connections to the fuse panel and see if there appears to be heat damage to any as some times heated connections can cause intermittent problems later. Things would appear as the insulation melted where the wire goes in or a discolored connector. Hopefully its just that fuse and you are golden.
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.
