thanks, TC! One last question...anyone know of a good spot to find slip-ons for this 4 to 2? I've been trying to look it up, and just coming up with full exhaust systems. That being said, i'm still trying to understand what TC is saying...are those emgo pods just not compatible with a 4 to 1, or is the bike generally not happy with it??

        Hey again,

This is a contentious subject, to POD or not to POD. I run Pods, but have an 81 with the later carbs, and the Velocity Stack mod, and they work fine! It's the restriction of the EMGO type pods that cause the main problem. Others will say that both Pods and 4-1s create too much flow needing much richer mixtures to tune/run properly. The higher scavenging/lower back pressure of 4-1's or other aftermarket pipes are known to drop the low rpm response and grunt/power vs. the OEM's with crossover and more restrictive flow.

Since we learned about using the Velocity stacks SIMILAR to what the OEM airbox has INSIDE it, the Pods seem to run just fine. YMMV, but I highly recommend installing some form of velocity stack mod to run any kind of POD filter, whether it be the EMGO's or any other brand/style.

Now, as for the slip ons. First measure the OD of the pipe section going into the muffler. Many folks recommend going to your local Harley Dealer and check for OEM pull offs that the H-D guys toss for their fancy LOUD systems they put on there!? holy sheebus....

upon REALLY taking these carbs apart to prep for berryman's, you should see how bad the pilots looked...i'll post a pic when I can. these problems are making WAY MORE sense now. the pilot in carb #1 was so stripped that I had to pull some risky moves to get it out. slowly, but surely i'm getting closer to having her running!!! also TC, I've got your carb mod ready to go. thanks for the info, dude!!
