I have stripped the threads of my final drive drain bolt and it won't tighten or come out, (just turns and turns) any suggestions how to remove it?

I do believe it's the same bolt and pitch as the oil pan bolt, so at-least you know it can be easily replaced. I'm thinking that you could get a screwdriver in-between the head and FD and pry it out? I just don't understand how it could strip in place?1979 XS1100F

As it's gone, you can also try a pair of vise grips, and pull down as you slowly turn the bolt. You may find it easier to remove the final drive and then work on it. You could them drain the oil through the fill, and use a left hand drill on the bolt. Hold it with an open end wrench to start, and then once the drill bites in, try backing it out as the drill is turning the bolt.Ray Matteis

A steel bolt in an alloy casting may have stripped the FD casting and the bolt may be fine but don't know if an insert is available in that size. GL1980 XS1100G "Dolly G" Full Dresser (with a coat of many colors )

Kev, Mine is on the way out too. It will be the soft aluminum of the housing that has failed. I believe it is an M14 1.5.
Princess Auto sells a thread repair kit for about $90 or replace the rear end for maybe $40 if you can find one locally.
Just one of the horns of dilema I find myself on
If you decide to get the kit...may I borrow it ? My oil drain needs re threading too.

Hey Phil,
Forget about a thread repair kit? You can get the next size up/larger oil drain bolt with self tapping threads to allow you to just enlarge the hole and cut new threads while you put it in, and they are a lot cheaper!! There is also a different type that has a smaller drain bolt INSIDE the larger one, so once you screw in the larger one tapping the threads as you go, you can then use some locktite and just secure that larger one in place, and then use the smaller bolt for the drain functions!

you can get 1100 final drives all day long on ebay for $10 - $20. Why even mess with it?
I have a half dozen on the shelves in the garage.Greg

What work? Take the wheel off? We did that to Tods bike in the hotel parking lot at Durango. The hard part was getting someone to help us out a thousand miles from home.
Why PATCH it when it can be just as easily and cheaply fixed correctly.Last edited by BA80; 05-26-2016, 06:26 AM.Greg

Sorry Greg, when you live in Canada there is no such thing as $20 final drives on ebay. I did see one for $15 (+$85 shipping)! My plan was to just cut new threads and insert a slightly bigger bolt. For now I'll just keep checking the fluid everyday, its been stripped for years but only this season have I noticed the fluid level dropping. I won't have any time this weekend to do anything about it.1979 XS1100SF 37000km
