    Can the cam chain guides be replaced from the top without dismantling the engine? About 5 years ago, I replaced the cam chain with one from parts n more. I noticed that this chain was lighter duty than the original, the pins in the links were thinner. Now my ACCT is at it's max extension and the chain is rattling again. Time to change it again. The F has 83K miles on it, had about 50K last time. I would like to change the guides cause before I got the ACCT, I made an adjuster with the bolt thru the original body, and may have run it too tight.

    Hey Rover,

    Okay, it's been 16 years since I did my rebuild, I do remember not taking the guides OUT, but now that I think about it, I remember pulling the jugs but not the cam chain, and so now I think I remember the guides being screwed/bolted the crankcase, and I had to be careful when putting the cylinders back down/on/over the cam chain/guides to get them back into the chain tunnel. Looking closely at the Yamaha fiche pages so that the securing bolts come from ABOVE and go downward thru the guide frame and screw/secure into I think the crankcase below it, but the diagram doesn't actually show what it screws into?

    SO...hopefully you can see and access the bolts in the tunnel to get it loose, but you'll have to be fairly careful to not drop the bolts down the tunnel into the engine, both when taking them out as well as then trying to put them back in when you put the new guides in!?

    PS, also because of the length of the guides and their lack of flexibility that you could have a bit of trouble getting them out up thru the frame above....so you might have to pull the engine to gain clearance of the frame for the guides to be able to come out?? Good Luck!

      The head must be removed to replace the cam chain slipper.

            Those slipper pads work pretty well and with good oil kept in the motor should last a long, long time. If you have doubts about them, you can remove the tensioner and feel with your finger through the hole how much "Meat" is left on the bar. The bar that's against the hole is the one that you would be concerned with, but you'll have to reach around it or... Take the valve cover off and get a flashlight and look down at it from above.

            If you wore out a cam chain in 30k miles, then yeah, I would say you ran it pretty tight. lol. I would opt for one of the ratcheting style tensioners next time. I have over 150k on a partsnmore cam chain with the ratcheting style auto-tensioners and still no noise, though it's time to check all that since the bike is wrecked. lol.

              cam chain

              I have a ratcheting cam chain adjuster, it seems to be at full extension. I guess I will have to remove it and put a stock unit in place and measure through the hole to see if the chain as stretched to 20 mm. The ACCT might be shorter that the stock model, I am not sure which one it is. I pulled the head off a spare engine that the P O left outside with the spark plugs out, and rusted up the insides. Had one hell of a time getting the head off. I see that the head and jugs will have to come off to change the slipper. I will go with the current slipper/guide if and when I change the chain. If my ACCT is at full extension, I will use the modded one till fall.

                Should'nt be shorter than the stock self-adjuster if you usd a correct one. Best self-adjuster to use is one of the two out of a Venture 1200 V-4.

                    cam chain

                    I used the following tensioner:90 Yamaha Venture Royale XVZ1300 TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER; I did not have a complete original to compare it with for extended length. I think there is one on another spare engine I have, will have to compare lengths.

                        Hey Rover,

                        I'll save you some trouble. In the 30 minute cam chain mod thread, I added some info when I did my MOD to the OEM adjuster. This photo shows the maximum amount of distance that the plunger will travel when it reaches the end of it's travel.

                        You can use a caliper to measure yours and see how close to this distance it is!
