  • idles only need carb kit

When I throttle up it dies. Mechanic says get carb kit. But when shopping on line, seems that there are tons of kits out there for 79s. But NOT for 80s. Can someone direct me to a link where I can buy the kit for my 1980? (79 kits do not work on 80s)
    Thanks for your help

You don't need a kit. They just need to be cleaned. The only parts that may need replacing are the bowl gasket which might break when you take the bowl off and then maybe a o-ring or 2. The kit is going to give you a bunch of incorrect jets that will make thing worse for you.

Just pull the carbs off and clean them up inside.

.....A big plus 1!.......and forget about any so called 'mechanic. If you intend on owning and keeping these ole' bikes for any period of time, gonna have to learn the 'ins and outs' of them HERE and all the work that's been suggested from HERE!

And, If you need someone to help you with them, I live on the other side of the hill from you. I DO know my way around these carbs, and the #1, #2, and #3 thing is CLEAN THEM! As stated, the K&L kits off ebay include all the wrong size jets. If it idles, but dies with throttle it's either too rich or too lean. Both conditions indicate internal dirt/varnish. Also, what do you have for an air filter? stock airbox is good, cheap pods are BIG PROBLEMS with the '80 up.
my cell number is in this reply, if you look.
Remember, every time you remove the carbs you MUST sync them again!

Ray and others, thanks! I'll forget the kits. Excellent suggestions. And fyi, I am NOT a wrencher. The only thing I know is how to turn the key and ride my black beauties. Ok, I do some body work and stuff like that. Change bulbs, etc. Sorry, but not all of us are mechanically inclined. I do know how to drive a big bus, lol.
Ray, ever come over the hill? Maybe you can stop by my house. Obviously I cannot go to you if bike not running.
