  • XS1100 SF Grab Rail

    What's this I hear that a XS1100G grab rail fits a XS1100SF and vis versa ?

    Any member confirm this?

I was under the impression the grab rail on the SF was unique to the SF.

The grab rail on the SF (as delivered from the factory) is indeed unique to the SF.

However, the grab rail on the G is very similar to the SF unit.

The SF rail has an extra upward bend in it right where the rear turn signals stick out. The G rail does not have this extra bend.

You can swap the rails between the SF and G ...

But if you were putting the SF rail on a G, I would think it might be a little tight getting the G seat on and off (due to possible interference by the rail).

Going the other way (G rail on the SF), it shouldn't be a problem.

        Well,

My '79 Special has the factory SF grab rail mounted, so I can't show you a pic in answer to your question.

But ... take a look at these two pics:

        '79 SF

        '80 G

I think there are two factors to consider:

        1) The lack of the G rail's extra upward bend by the turn signals

        2) The SF seat doesn't extend back quite as far as the G seat

When you combine these two factors, I think you'll see a larger "gap" (in the back, compared to a stock set-up) between the grab rail and the seat.

Surely someone here has done it ... perhaps they will chime in with their experience ... and maybe even a pic!

I think they are all made from unobtainium these days. I put a 78 seat on my 80 standard because I couldn’t find either a good 80 seat or grab bar.

Here’s a 79 special grab bar for sale...looks pretty nice and the price is right! Hold off until the end of the auction and then bid the maximum price you are willing to spend in the last 20 seconds. The price will only go a dollar higher than the max bid.....and if it goes higher than you wanted to spend it was too expensive. Lol

Wow, the price sure went up on that thing. $130 guess a lot of people put bids down. Ouch.

If that was what I needed to complete my bike, I would have paid it. If they ever get reproduced (don’t hold your breath), they will cost more than that.

Yes. You can have one made if you have one to copy. What will it cost? I think the one on eBay would seem a good deal.

Hens don't have teeth ! A good goose on the other hand.

I saw that grab bar on eBay when it was $100, a friend is wanting one, when I told him he laughed.
He won't spend that on a bike he bought from me for $1300.

That's the bike I did my first 2nd gear fix on (THANK YOU ALL !!!!). Now with another 20K on it the trans is doing fine even with his hammering and the guys that stole it burning half the tire away.
