  • 78 E lighting

Each one of these bikes are different. So, I put a battery in the E today and everything works fine with the motor off except the left signals. When I throw the switch the cancel relay just chatters. The front signals both light up but neither of the rears do but the right rear will flash with the switch thrown. I've eliminated the pilot console and the handle bar controls.
My question concerns the yellow green wire that runs from the cancel rely to the indicator unit. Is the connector for the cancel relay the "indicator unit?
And should both the front and rear lights be on without the motor running?

......should be.........possibly a couple unseen minor corrosion gremlins runnin' around somewhere.

      Gremlins

I tested all the lights before I installed them so I know they're good. The bike hasn't been started yet and hasn't left the shop yet. I tested the brown wire from the fcr to the left rear connector and it's good. But I can't find the other end of the yellow/green wire to test it. Hence my question about the indicator unit. I'm going to swap the feeds from the right to left rear tomorrow and see what happens. If I don't get signal then I know it's probably the ground connector at the frame/mounting point. Seems to me I was short the dish washer and improvised with a large washer.

        if im

Looking at this diagram right, the power goes through the flaser relay first, then into the cancel relay right.

Check the ground wire on the non working rear light. Make SURE you have a good ground from the battery to the frame in back. If you powder coated the frame, you will need to run ground wires to the rear, as powder coat is plastic, and an insulation. The other option is to make sure the frame is clean down to bare metal at the bolt, but that WILL lead to rust under the powder coat.

              Progress

I've tracked it down to a broken tan wire someplace between the flasher relay and the tail light. Not so bad, at least I only have to cut into a portion of the harness. I'm actually debating just running a graft wire and taping it to the existing harness. I have OCD and this will bother me everytime I get on it. The bike will always seem less than perfect to me.

                Fixed

Tracked it down to a broken tan wire (I referred to it a brown before) right after the flasher relay. PO had messed with harness location and it had a crimp. When I installed it correctly during the restore I'd straightened it out and the wire snapped. Horn was not working because the grounding tab at the handlebar control wasn't making contact. She's all good now. Fire it up and tune it tomorrow
Too nice a day today not to be riding, going take the SF out for a long one.
