    I think after I got my 81SH home from Japan, I think I had it serviced by the Shop once, but then put about 50K miles on it and NEVER checked the valve clearances, and it ran just fine. After it died/rusted, I rebuilt the head and lapped the valves and THEN I reset the cleances...now that I think about it, that was possibly 20+K miles ago, still running strong, I'll be checking the clearances this summer when I do my big refresh on it.
