  • Selecting a new head. Aka Oh those pesky POs.

So the dude who sold me my XS, or his predecessor, rounded off the oil filter bolt head. I knew this going in, and I had two plans. They've failed. I cannot get a hole in the bolt head to get an extractor into, I cannot get a bolt extractor socket jammed on it securely enough to get a grip and back it out. I have not been able to grind new flats into the head to get a plier or a smaller wrench on it. The POs (and others') suggestion is my next step: i"m intending to weld a nut on the head of the old bolt. Anyone done this?

Yeah it's a pretty blue, but just because you're old is no excuse to buy a bagger. Fortunately I have wrenches.

I've done it on a seized exhaust stud and it worked great, I TIG welded it though, as to not damage any of the surrounding aluminum

Weld a old socket to the bolt.

Thanks gentlemen. The Tool(s) shown are exactly the type I tried to use. I may be the problem. Borrowed a set of Matcos from a tech at my dealership (auto), and he was amazed they didnt work. Once I can get other eyes on her, the dragon lady may give up her secrets and come apart gently. Our body man is the brain behind the weld - up idea, so I'm going go bring her into work on a trailer (Oh did I mention this is the gasoil bike?) and we'll have to see what we can do about clearances and avoiding the "surrounding aluminum" Also like the socket idea, as I was becoming concerned about how much room I would have between fins to get tools on the extended filter bolt. Well....stuck at the desk today, so I'll just sit on the internet instead of riding or wrenching. *grumble*

Thanks BA. Wasn't sure why I was looking at the cover. Especially since on the first viewing I only saw the inside. After scrolling down, I it looks like my access problems were more from the busted up floor, laying on said floor, and absence of a lift (my MC lift wont fit under my XS) than from fins on the filter housing. i'm also liking the socket idea more and more. Any feedback on JB Weld for this application? Now that I am flat dead paranoid about sparking "the surrounding aluminum".

I posted that ebay link so you wouldn't worry about destroying the cup. Even if you ruin it, it can be replaced.

It HAS to come off though, whatever it takes.

AYE. i did a 2/3 oil change right away, to get fresh oil in even if it was still going to sit. I visualized badness happening in the oil. Had no plan to run the motor til later, so i didnt let the filter bother me, even though I did buy another bolt and o ring. I tell you i was SO stoked to tear into this thing when I got it. Inertia has conquered most of that vitality these days

Hi Jeff, just have your welder grind clean the head of the stripped bolt and take a nut about the same size or a little bigger and MIG it right on top of the stripped head don't worry about sparks your welder should know the pertinent safety precautions. GL

That's a pretty cheap price. I'd jump on that just for the bolt......if I needed one.

That was where i was going, but I fell in love with the socket idea.

OH, I already have a replacement bolt, btw. woohoo

The last horribly mangled, stuck oil filter bolt I had to remove was my XJ650. My final resort was to cut grooves in the bolt shoulder and use a hammer and punch around the outside edges. An automatic center punch works wonders on smaller stripped screws with the same approach.
