  • Unknown Mikuni Parts Sharing

    XS11 Folks,
I'm having some of the typical troubles with the Mikunis on two of my XS11's. I'm about to spend the day pulling them apart and trying to fix the issues (stuck floats, float level, throttle response, etc.). They are absolutely clean as a whistle but the introduction of B&L parts seems to have been a bad move for me. I'm going back to the OEM mains and re-checking all the floats

I have this "Oddball" set of Mikunis that a PO had put on one of my XS11's. I removed them and replaced them with a semi-proper set from an 11. In SOME areas they share parts that are identical to my 11's Mikunis, in other ways they are completely different.

I have NO IDEA what model these are or what they came and there are NO NUMBERS anywhere on them. BUT, they share the same identical floats and the bowls have the built-in drain port I want to use for checking the floats and probably leave them on there. None of my XS11 carbs (SG, SG, SH) have these built-in ports they all have brass plugs.

In addition, they have this neat little float stop tab built into the float needle holder bracket that will stop the float from bottoming. On this model they do not use a little "Clip" on the needle as this little "tab" seems to perform that function. I'm thinking about using these. Bad idea?

    Your thoughts please.

    Respectfully,
    KURT

P.S. What model XS11 actually had the build-in bowl drain port? If any?

    Hi Kurt,

The bowl drains like you have in your pics came stock on '81 models and later as the float height adjustment spec was calibrated with matching fuel levels across all four carbs.

The hose ports on the engine side of your "oddball" carbs must be the air bleeds for the bowls.

The spacing on those carbs look wide but maybe just the pic.

    What jets are in them?

As for your other Mikuni carbs, use nothing but genuine Mikuni parts for trouble free tuning, especially float valves & seats
1980 XS1100G "Dolly G" Full Dresser (with a coat of many colors )
    1979 XS1100SF (stock-euro mods planned)
    1984 XV700L Virago (to be hot-modded)
    1983 XJ750MK Midnight Maxim (semi-restored DD)
    1977 XS650D ( patiently awaiting resto)

Sometimes it takes a whole tank of gas before you can think straight.

        Kaw 1100 Carbs

        Greg & Schming,
Thanks for the info. Just got the tanks & seats off the bikes and am about to start ripping in....

Those Kaw carbs on evil-bay sure look like my ODD-BALL set. Mine have hard plastic slide caps. Otherwise, they look identical. Thanks, now I know what they were.....

I'll probably use the bowls for bench WET testing only since I have three of these 11's and they could be handy for each. Once I verify the floats are working at the right level on each I'll put their stock bowls back on leaving these for testing and setting of the other bikes.

Since pulling the carbs out is such a PITA I'm not going to risk using the special little tab equipped float stopper? Probably not a great idea?

          Jets 42.5 & Unknown

          Schming,
The pilots are 42.5 and in very nice unmolested condition, good spares. Should be a good fit on my SGs & SH.

The Mains are so screwed up I can't read 'em, slots buggered all up, heads look like they were sanded, not useful as spares.

Just an FYI.......some of that stumble/throttle response on those XS G/H model carbs having the recessed mixture srews is from vacuum leaking of the teeny O-rings. IIRC, NA from Yamaha but available from Suzuki. O-ring part no. is 3295-29900...........teeny washer part no. is..........99040A316.
81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

              MotoMan,
THANK YOU. I will order some new ones FAST!

I do recall very clearly, long long ago when I worked in the Yamaha dealer as a kid ('79-'82), the head mechanic use to fill the idle mixture screw access holes with RTV when he was done a tune-up. I was not allowed to work on street bikes. Dirt Bikes, Snowmobiles, Lawnmowers, Chainsaws. I sure got the chance now!

On short notice I just welded up this rig using a re-purposed stand I had for another purpose. Not at all pretty, but functional! I had to use the B&L needles and seats the OEM were not worthy....

I found that I had previously installed the 125 mains not the correct 120's. Hopefully, this change to 120's will do the trick for The DUCK. Time to put 'em back in and pull the carbs on MAYBERRY. She's leakin' like a PIG!

That be K&L, not B&L. Anyway, they are crap and raise havik with trying to tune.........just as bad as using K&L pilots and main jets.......a tuning nightmare and it'll never happen anyways. Use Genuine Mikuni jets and Genuine Mikuni needles and seats. You AND the bike will be way happier............and tunable.
