  • Hyvo guide

Should there be much wear on the hyvo chain guide? My other three motors showed some contact but not enough to wear the finish off at the ends. I assume this is from hard decelerations. Any comment?

They seem to be worn when you look at them mack but that's just the way they are made.

    How about a pic?

I'm wondering if the chain is worn. Do you know what the circumference is stock?

I don't know what it is OEM, but that chain is "Supposed" to not ever need replacing. That being said, I've had some that were pretty sloppy and replaced them when rebuilding, though they would have probably been just fine. That doesn't seem to be very much wear, in my opinion, and yes, I do believe that is caused on decel. I've honestly never removed one of those for the hyvo chain. Slap it together and ride it like ya stole it!

I've talked to and read about people that use these engines in midget racing, drag racing, and pulling applications and they have pretty much all voiced that they had doubts about the hyvo drive but after using them they say they have had almost no issue with it. The engines will scatter before any chain problems.

if it makes you feel better, replace it but I don't think it's available new anymore.

If Tod hasn't broke it, it can't be broke.

            Thanx

This is the spare motor. Like I said before I think he did a lot quarter miling with it, so it makes sense that the guide would show wear from chopping the throttle at the end of runs. I've rebuilt everything so it's pretty much new now. I have a spare hyvo chain and guide that I'll put in. This was just my last confirmation of how the motor was used during it's early life.
Not to sure what I'm going to do with it once it's done since all my other motors have all been rebuilt as well. The odds of me putting enough miles on three bikes to wear out a motor at my age is pretty slim.

                  Hyvo Chain

I found my spare chain and hung the old and new one side by side on a screw driver . Not too scientific but it does show the chain is stretched some. Not all that much but apparently they do stretch with abuse!
