  • Turn signals

I just happened to read a post on turn signals not cancelling but on my SH my turn signals flash for 10sec then turn off which means i have to keep turning them on
Im not sure exactly how theyre supposed to operate but was under the impression they stayed on til u turned in motion. Can anyone tell me what may be wrong and how they normally work. Thanx

The signals turn off using a time/distance travelled factor, the faster you are going, the faster they cancel. Ten seconds sounds about right. A normal electronic flasher can be used to convert back to manual operation. Many of us have done this due to signals cancelling too early.

Edit: or you can unplug the flasher cancel unit under the seat to disable, and use the flasher relay that you already have.

Like Phil said, they're supposed to cancel on a time/distance basis. Stopped at a light, they generally will stay on until you move but not always. You might check to see if the reed switch in the speedometer is good, if it's failed 'closed' that may be your problem.

On the XJ you can cancel the auto-cancel by quickly pushing the turn button twice within about 2 seconds. (Bump, bump) The turn light will flash until manually canceled. I used this at long stop lights or any time I want the turn indicators to stay on longer than the auto-cancel feature will allow. IIRC this is explained in the XJ manual which I don't have handy at the moment. I would think the same is true for 11s?

I wasn't aware of that "feature" on the XJ. I know the XS's flash for about 100 meters of travel (if moving faster, it goes longer). If I need to keep them flashing longer, I just reset the "timer" by pressing the switch again. Pressing twice in quick succession definitely does not bypass the auto-cancel on the XS.
