Hi JW, how are you? I have the Plexifairing 3 on the SG since 2011 for the Durango Rally. I didn't realize it was taller in overall mounted height where it matters to the rider vs the "2". I was under the impression the "3" is longer overall because it has the lowers that add coverage to the lower legs, but the same height above the headlight. I am probably wrong, but wanted to ask and clarify.

OK, now I have to confess I called my windscreen by the wrong name. I didn't think it was worth fixing, but now the discussion has wandered into where the name is important.
I bought the Plexistar 2 because I liked the Plexifairing 3, but I didn't like the way the lower part looked.
I didn't notice some other subtle differences mentioned in the sales description:
"...The classic Plexistar 2™ is the sporty version of the Plexifairing. The cut of the Plexistar 2 is a bit larger around the headlight opening and the extended lowers are shorter....
•The Plexistar 2 increases ventilation while providing upper chest and hand protection"
Then the Plexifairing 3 sales description says:
"The Plexifairing 3™ features extended hand and leg protection to make riding more comfortable. A protective gasket is closely fit around the headlight opening"
Pictures:
They look to be the same height.-Mike

Excellent explanation and pics. Love the Plexi III a lot. I am taller than most, and look easily over the top. Duck down to a few inches below the top, and it is still air, which isn't a practical riding position but gives some idea of how it will work for most everyone else. On rainy rides, my shoulder armor pads get wet, my shins get wet starting a few inches below the knee, and I get a good breeze over the face shield to keep it clear of what little rain hits it when at speed.
Only downside is with a headwind there is a decent amount of helmet buffeting for me since I sit up so high. However, ducking down a few inches and all is calm like I said above, but I don't ride like that so I deal with it on day's when there's a headwind.
I have a 1/4" gap between the headlight and screen cutout. I am going to go bigger on that this spring to see if I can lose some of the buffeting up top.
Top notch windscreen!Howard

I agree with John's assessment to bring the screen up 2"...maybe 3"...after looking at pics of mine it is clearly a good 4" above the headlamp.....BTW I am 5'9" and 30" inseam...

Ben:
That picture is worth a thousand words.
I can't wait until it gets warm enough to try again.
I left it so discouraged after I had such high hopes and I was so meticulous with the installation.....

Finally Better
Last weekend (not this weekend), the temperature was conducive to further windscreen testing.
First I rode it "as is", and refreshed my reference buffeting.
Then I raised the windscreen about 1 1/4"...as far it would go before the 'pipe clamp' bottom mounts interfered with the headlight mounting ears.
The buffeting went away.
However, now I have too look through the windscreen instead of over it.
Also I was disappointed about how much wind still remained in random directions. I was hoping I could ride in the rain with the face shield on my helmet. After trying the new setting, I expected there would still be rain getting inside my helmet if I didn't use the face shield. Anyone care to comment about your experience in the rain?-Mike

I have the GT version of what you have. It juts out to cover the handgrips somewhat. It did okay in the rain. Not as well as a Pacifico would, but it's better than nothing. I'll be having to ride to Lansing for however long, so the windscreen will stay on for the time being.1979 XS1100F

Looking over is preferred (for me)

Must have taken you a month to get that Special looking that pretty again! But darn it does look gorgeous! Nice Mike! Nice!
Personally, I've only driven in the rain a couple times with the XS11. I strongly prefer looking OVER the windscreen. I remember being behind Billy while he struggled to look AROUND his rain covered Wind-Jammer Screen.
The hand-me-down screen I have keeps the wind and rain MOSTLY off my chest making the ride less stressful. But if I have to look through a screen, I want a windshield wiper system.

Yes, You should be able to look over the windscreen. The water and splash-back can severely reduce visibility. You need to see long enough to get to an off ramp and get to a warm place!Skids (Sid Hansen)
