  • Neutral Switch Strange Wiring?

I just completed the 79 and went for a ride runs great. The neutral light is on all the time. Here's what I found? Would this not keep the switch on all the time? The red wire is that original? Why would someone do this ? I did not have time to remove or do any checking yet got to warm up a little

An issue with the pick up coil wires. They did that so it'll stay running when put in gear.

You need to open up that harness and repair the wires or get a different set of pick ups.

      Thank You

      Greg,
Thank you this was very strange to me. I appreciate your help this is great it just made no sense to me. I will trace out the wires and check them for anything fixable and search for some pick up coils if no luck.
I would have removed and had no clue

something to be said for experience.

      Thank you

The insulation deteriorates inside the sheathing and the wires will touch each other and ground through the neutral switch. As soon as it's shifted into gear and the light goes out it loses ground and the engine will die.

Get one of these electrical gurus to explain why, I don't understand myself, just know it does.

Another possibility is a defective neutral switch. Same symptoms as above.

Maybe someone wanted to bypass the safety interlock? Assuming the rest of the system is wired correctly, if the neutral light is off, and the clutch lever is not pulled in, you can't start the engine. So, if the neutral switch isn't grounding correctly, the PO wouldn't have been able to start the engine without pulling the clutch lever. This little hack makes the interlock think the bike is always in neutral, allowing the start button to work at all times.
