To check the reed switch, connect a OHM meter across the two wires coming off it, then turn the speedometer. The switch should open/close/open as you turn...
You may need an analog meter as most digital ones don't react fast enough to read. If your digital has a bar-graph feature, it will work. More info here:

Don't use a 'test light' checker as the current draw of the light may burn the contacts in the switch.
