  • Lost number 2 cylinder

    Went for a a ride yesterday about 5 miles. Started back and number 2 began to miss fire. Got the bike home and pulled the plugs out number 2 was soaked with fuel. There was also fuel in the bottom of the air box. Cleaned the plugs and spun the engine with the plugs ground in the fins and got strong spark on all 4. Pulled the carbs out checked for obstruction in number 2 needle and seat nothing to be found. Put it all back together after checking the carbs still had a miss fire on number 2. I put dynatek wires and new vf1000 coils last year. All floats set at 23mm. This all happened suddenly while I was entering the highway under 3/4 throttle. Any ideas or input would be greatly appreciated. This has never happened before.

    Fouled Plug

    No doubt there is/was a problem in number 2 carburetor. May not be firing now due to that plug being fouled. Switch no 2 plug with one of the other cylinder plugs.

    If plug is still getting wet, something is still wrong with number 2 carb.

      Kind of sounds like you could have developed a hole in the #2 float.

        Plugs

        I did try new plugs and still has fuel on number 2. Do y'all think the coil not firing on number 2 could be the problem?

          Try switching the plug wires on the respective coil #3 to #2 and see if #2 fires

            You a pick-up coil wire issue under the left sidecover. Remove the cover and use both hands to try and seperate each wire every inch. If insulation stretches, that's the issue. Bettin' on the white wire as the issue.

              Was thinking about trying to switch the coils and see if the issue continues. I will also check the left side cover. Any other ideas?

                Nope..........you got secondary ignition issues, and a SLIGHT chance THAT carbs pilot jet is STILL plugged up. You'll have to remove THAT pilot jet and use a magnifying glass and small LED lite to inspect its internal portion........period.

                    Forgot to mention that my bike is an 80G with the plastic floats. Never occurred to me check for a hole in the floats when I pulled the carbs looking for the problem. When it warms up again I will check that and the other issues mentioned. Thanks for all the help guys.

                      They are a solid fiber material............no such thing as getting a hole in them.(assuming those are 1980 or later carbs) Again, as i previously stated, either a secondary ignition issue OR fuel level is to high having an incorrect float height. That static float height IS just a ball-park setting related to acual fuel height in bowl.

                        If I switch plug wires 2 & 3 on the coils to narrow it down to #2 carb do I need to switch the wires from the harness that plug into the vf1000 could as well?

                          To bad you didn't read post#11. ALL you new folks seriously need to read and follow what's stated by us old folks here who have worked on and reidden these ole' scoots for the past 35+yrs..

                            Kind of why my replies get pissy after a while and I am not on here as much lately. Owned and worked on an XS1100 since 1979.... Might know a thing or two. Heck the mechanic that assembled my 79 special has me rebuilding his carbs now. By the way he is still a motorcycle mechanic, but he now specializes in HD's.
                            Oh well. We shall wait and see what the solution is...eh!
