  • Here's the XS - Photos and some questions

I figured I would open a thread in this forum to discuss the XS I purchased for rebuild.

I was able to get it running after changing the oil. The side window showing the oil level was completely full and black prior to draining. I think I removed 6+ quarts from the case. The oil was completely black/filthy. I think the previous owner put in 10-40. I wasnt able to find 20w-40 but did go with the 20w-50 as suggested.

Now here come the stupid questions...

I have the manual but have no idea what this is:

This is attached to that. I think this is a bleeder tube? When the previous owner started the XS up for me, he told me he had filled it with oil and "may have filled it too much." When it started, oil was gushing out of this tube.

What the Hell are these? They are just sitting there. The second photo is the other end of it. They arent attached to anything...

I dont know if these vids will play. Hopefully they will. The first one is after I got it running. Smoke is coming out of the tube. Im assuming it will eventually go away once the oil is burned off.

The second vid is of it just running. It hasnt been run in a long time so I would assume there would be initial problems but does it sound like its knocking?

Any thoughts or advice as I move on. Ill keep this thread updated as I refurb it.

That is the crankcase breather tube. It vents into the airbox, so the vented fumes can be burned. If the crankcase gets overfilled enough, oil will travel up the vent tube, collect in the bottom of the airbox, then leak out of the airbox vent all over the top of the crankcase. Get enough on there, and it will roll off as you accelerate from a stop and land on the hot exhaust header, which will provide some entertainment for whoever is following you. Great for mosquito control too. By itself, this situation is not especially damaging, as long as the apparent overfill is actually from someone adding too much oil. If the overfill is actually from leaking petcock(s) and float valve(s) flooding raw gasoline into the crankcase, this could be catastrophic for your bearings.

Safest would be to drain it completely and refill with the correct amount of fresh oil.

Looks like a PO added in a short harness for electrically heated underwear or vest. The underwear or vest would plug in to the plug, and the other end would have been attached to a power point and ground.

The red and black wires look like the ones for my battery tender which I use to keep the battery charged over the winter.
The thick tube looks like the breather tube that would have been connected to the original airbox which has been replaced by the air pods.
I was wondering to myself, what to do with that breather tube now that the airbox is gone, just let it dangle freely ?

        Video's ran fine

Hey, mosquito control action there, like Ken stated, drain and refill.

Wires are for something, battery tender maybe, that was attached to your battery at some point.

From the sound of it you need to re-shim the valves, other maintenance to follow. One thing at a time.

Polished sides, good exhaust, looks like a lot of manual elbow grease incoming and you'll have a nice ride.

That's the breather tube. Typically you see it replaced with a filter when swapping out the airbox for pods.

The harness looks exactly like the harness that comes with a battery tender. The ring terminals connect to the battery and the quick connect connects to a battery tender. I assume they're generic and all look the same, though

            Hey SoupGuy,

Looks like Photobucket has changed their LINKs that they provide. The link that says IMG is actually just a LINK to bring the viewer back to the Photobucket site!

The DIRECT Link/text that they provide is what you want to grab instead. But then you just need to use the INSERT IMAGE button in the compose message window for each photo.....OR you can just type/add the IMG tags yourself both in front of and just after pasting the actual photo text like.....
            [ IMG ]http...phototext..jpg[/ IMG ]

I put extra spaces between the IMG and the [ ] 's so you could see them here in this example. Putting these around the photo link will actually allow the photo to be displayed here in the actual message/post! See below!
