What's missing?

Hey fellas, I'm new to the forum but not to vintage bikes. I picked this '79 XS1100 Standard up this past weekend and in going over it have discovered there are a few pieces missing, but I wanted to confirm with yall before I start hunting for parts.



So far I know I'm missing the swingarm cap covers, right side footpeg mount, a fuse panel, and some type of strap that holds the battery in (not sure because I have yet to see a decent picture of what it's supposed to look like under that left side cover). Can you guys tell if anything else is missing?




And one more thing: seeing as there is no fuse panel it looks to me as if someone created their own plug in fuses at some point, so what should I do here? In the meantime I've got a Clymer manual on the way with a color wiring diagram.

Hello there.!welcome.!As far as the wiring When you get her started you will have to see what issues you have.These bikes come with the old glass fuse's So the guy rewired it.There's better ways of doing it!!
The battery is missing hold down piece(top) and side piece to hold in.I don't see blinkers .rear.You will have all sort of responses soon.Good luck.!I don't know how to post pics others here do .

The swingarm caps are the same for all XS/XJ 1100, so those won't be hard to track down. The footpeg mount will have to be off a '78-80 standard only, along with the muffler bracket if it's missing and the brake pedal/pedal shaft/return spring. Here's what you're looking for...

The battery holddown can be tough to find, most got thrown away or eaten by battery acid. If you have the top piece, the strap can be made. Pics found here...

I don't see blinkers .rear.

This bike actually came with saddle bags and the rear signals are attached to those at the moment. The PO also told me there used to be a side car attached, but he took it off to sell seperately.

Thanks for those links! They'll help tremendously. I found a set of caps on Ebay for cheap, along with the right side peg mount. I DO have the return spring for the brake pedal, just not the brake pedal itself, and the muffler bracket is still attached to the muffler luckily. I'm currently waiting on a guy to get back to me about a brake pedal and a right side cover (mine is cracked along the bottom pretty good).

Yep, that's the top bracket, you still need the strap. This is simply a metal strap with a slot in the bottom to hook onto the tray and a 'L' bracket at the top to hold the nut that the bolt that goes through the top bracket attaches to. The 'hook' at the other end of the top bracket goes into a slot in the battery tray. The strap will run diagonal from top left to bottom right when installed.

If I did this right, here's a pic....



Top of strap to bottom of slot is 7 1/8", overall length is 7 3/8", slot width is 1/2". These aren't too hard to make....

You also have the wrong headlight and front turn signals. The headlight and turn signals are supposed to be the recrangular ones, not the round ones.

I did notice that only the Special's had round headlights, but I'm not complaining because I think the round light looks SO much better than the rectangular light.

It's a frankenbike. A PO cluster f..... intercourse.

Best bet is take it apart and put it back together right. Looks like the important parts are there, it needs a fuse panel plate and the correct solenoid, a spade type fuse box to clean up the wiring mess there. The cosmetics don't mean much until the electrical works right and the engine runs right. IMHO

The cosmetics are what needs to be done LAST. Those swingarm bolts have got to be full of dirt and rust.

I'll be sure to check that out, but I'm also doubtful that it's the case. This bike has been garage kept it's whole life and the paint on the frame is original. It's also got the tool kit under there, and the tools look great to be 36 years old. I'll be going over every nut and bolt as well, I've already found that it's missing the bolt & nut holding the top triple tree to the stem.

Welcome. As the owner of THREE XS11's that also meet the description provided by BA80 , I can tell your bike is in pretty decent shape. It does look like all the hardest and most expensive to purchase parts are there.
Personally, I've found that the hardest XS11 parts to find are:
1.) Factory Exhaust in serviceable condition - Yours looks good!
2.) Fuel tank that's not rusted to death - Hope yours is good?
3.) Seat or at least a nice seat pan than can be recovered - Got one?
4.) Side covers in nice shape. - Your right one looks good!
Everything else can be found used or new with relative ease for these bikes and although it can certainly add up.... no one piece will break the bank.

A wiring mess on a bike this old is kinda' typical (at least with the junk I've bought ). I did my own rebuild using a similar but MUCH neater job than the PO of your bike...


This is an older photo and I cleaned it up slightly more. This does show the mounting plate you are missing and a correct solenoid.

Cool! I was hoping some guys near me might chime in. The downside is that I'm only in Raleigh till the second week of December, I'll be graduating from NCSU then and going back to Elkin to start work.

Everything else can be found used or new with relative ease for these bikes and although it can certainly add up.... no one piece will break the bank.

1) My exhaust is in PERFECT shape, it was the first thing I checked when picking up the bike. I was really suprised by it.
2) The tank is gonna take some work to get right. Opening it up it looks like some gas varnished it a long time ago, and then someone put a tank liner over the varnish. I'm gonna have to fill it up with some acetone and clean it out real good.
3) The seat is in great shape as well (it's also a Travlecade if that means anything), no rust in the pan either.
4) My right side cover is cracked all along the bottom, possibly fixable but I found another on ebay fairly cheap.

There's also quite a few electrical panels on ebay right now, and your picture helps a lot to show me where everything is supposed to go.

only have one pic and it was way worse than this although my understanding is that Swampthing was a complete bike just sat neglected in a bayou for years...Randy did an amazing job on her and I rode with him and the bike for a good number of years at XSEast rallies admiring it and the man for what he had accomplished...To his credit this bike is still awesom and has held up very well in the 12 years since it was restored...I'll try to find that one pic...
