What's the difference between the round unit on the 78 - 80 and the square unit on the 81?

If I were to guess, does it have anything to do with the four-way blinkers?

I believe the 4 way is on a separate flasher under the seat like the 80.

Electrically, there shouldn't be any difference. Same lamps so it's the same load. You might check to make sure the terminals are in the same places...

Thanks Steve. I just didn't want to plug it in on my SG and fry something.

The terminals look the same. I guess I'll plug it in and see what happens.

I'm thinking there are 4 turn signals on pretty much all bikes Brant.

Yeah, thanks Pete. I needed that input.

Hey, it seems to me I owed you some money for something but I don't recall what or how much. BTW, what would it take to get a setup like you put on Harry's bike for the air forks.

The one up under the seat is for the 4 way/emergency flashers. That one is just a regular 2 prong automotive flasher. I replaced mine with an electronic one from O'Reillys.

The 3 prong unit under the right cover is unique. The 3rd prong works with the self canceling unit up under the seat. Self canceling blinkers were on all years of XS and XJ. The 3 prong unit is still available but a bit pricey.

                      Flasher unit is #8. http://www.partzilla.com/parts/searc...L+2/parts.html

There is an alternative to the special factory flasher....

                        http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=39871

This will convert the circuit so you can use a standard automotive flasher and still retain the auto-shutoff feature.
